Fear the Walking Dead Review: Good Out Here (Season 4 Episode 3)

Fear the Walking Dead, Reviews, The Walking Dead

What the hell was that? Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 3 “Good Out Here” presents us with another great episode, but seriously, what the hell was that ending?!

Nick Clark, the zombie apocalypse poster boy, is dead.

And after he had a bonding session with Morgan!

At the beginning of the episode, Nick is in a bad place. He’s upset about Charlie being part of the Vultures and he is even more upset about his dead crops and the inability to feed his loved ones. Madison can tell her son is hurting.

When she says she is going outside the gates, Nick says he wants to go too.

Considering we saw him freak out on Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 2 “Another Day in the Diamond,” it’s kind of a big deal that Nick wants to hit the road with Madison.

We move back into the present and back into the Swat truck with Althea, John, Morgan, Luciana, Strand, Nick, and Alicia. A fight ensues when Althea says she didn’t give Victor the exact directions back to the white flag.

The truck ends up in a ditch and the others part ways to get supplies to tow it out. The B plot allows Nick and Morgan to spend some time together.

They have immediate chemistry as actors and it’s fun to watch them interact together—especially when Morgan is knocking Nick down with his stick.

Nick’s practically grinning as he is knocked to the ground.

They share a protein bar and when Morgan does his exercises up on the road, Nick sneaks a peek at Morgan’s story on Althea’s video camera. He’s intrigued by Morgan. The sound of an engine causes Nick to look up.

He sees a blue Camino speed past and Nick takes off trying to follow it.

In the past, we see the Camino in the parking lot of the baseball stadium, and then again out on the road when Madison and Nick make their ninth stop and come up with nothing.

While out searching for supplies, Nick confesses that he feels trapped on the outside. He doesn’t like the person he is forced to become.

Oh, Nick.

They run into the Vulture in the Camino and Nick nearly slits his throat. Charlie sees the interaction and Nick is angry at himself because of it.

I get that the Clarks are hurt by Charlie’s betrayal, but I wish we had spent a bit more time with Charlie as well so that we can feel their pain. There’s nothing really endearing about her.

The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead certainly know how to write annoying kid characters.

Nick wants to know how Madison can keep going out and she says that every time, she tries to find something good.

Nick comes across bluebonnets after chasing down the Camino. He is thinking about Madison when some walkers attack him.

For a moment, it looks like Nick could be a goner—but Morgan saves him.

Since the first episode of Season 4, I’ve wondered where Madison is in the present. “Good Out Here” makes me think that Madison Clark is dead and that the Vulture in the blue Camino is the reason why.

I thought that Madison’s fate would be the big reveal at end of “Good Out Here” but I was wrong.

Morgan sees the Camino again and then, the Vulture. He tries to get him to leave, but the Vulture doesn’t listen.

Morgan also tries to stop Nick from going after the Vulture but also fails at that because he’s not willing to do what he needs to in order to stop Nick.

Nick fights with the Vulture and then kills him, while looking at him straight in the eyes, not unlike Morgan and the Savior who killed Henry’s brother.

Morgan gives Nick his The Art of Peace book and tells him that he can talk to him about anything.

Nick’s reading the book when we get one more flashback to the past where Madison and Nick come across a field full of bluebonnets.

We hear a shot.

Back in the present, Nick falls to the ground. Charlie is holding the gun.

In a very emotional scene, Luciana, Strand, and Alicia cry over him as Nick Clark dies.

Since we’re still figuring out what has happened in the past, we’ll still see Nick, which will be a little weird.  Nick’s death is shocking and he’s my favorite character, so it’ll be a little tough to watch Fear the Walking Dead knowing his sad fate.

I was looking forward to Nick and Morgan bonding more, but that will not happen.

Apparently, Frank Dillane, who plays Nick, asked to be written off of Fear the Walking Dead. So, what were the writers supposed to do?

It will be interesting to see where Fear the Walking Dead goes from here. I’m a little skeptical but know that Fear the Walking Dead is a better show than The Walking Dead. Hopefully, Nick’s death will have a great impact on where we go from here and not be the start of a slippery slope towards mediocrity.

Walker Nibbles:

  • What is the Bog? I hope we see some of Althea’s tapes.
  • Althea is a tad annoying about wanting everyone’s “story” but I like that she is trying to document the apocalypse.
  • John and Luciana’s scene is nice. John seems like a sweetheart.
  • Alicia continues to have the best hair of the apocalypse.
  • She also is a total badass and killed a bunch of walkers Rick Grimes style.
  • I still can’t believe Nick is dead.
