Mary Kills People Review: Twin Flames (Season 2 Episode 3)
Mary Kills People Season 2 Episode 3, “Twin Flames,” pulls no punches on yet another exciting installment chronicling the mess Mary is in.
The previous episode of Mary Kills People Season 2 Episode 2, “The Connection,” ended on a cliffhanger, and this one has a big twist.
A big, satisfying twist.
The writers do a good job of setting it up, and I fall for it easily while hoping there’s a catch.
Mary: So you’re just gonna swoop in and save me?
Ben: I guess so.
Mary is in desperate need of saving this time. On Mary Kills People Season 1 Episode 6, “Morning Glory,” Mary cleverly saved herself. She didn’t need the love interest to be anything other than the pawn she meant for him to be in her game.
Olivia has complicated things to the point where Mary can’t get out by herself, and the stakes have risen to where her children’s lives are in danger.
Ever the control freak, Mary tries to do it all herself. Annie can see her spiraling, but knows it’s nearly impossible to get through to her. “Doctors. You know there are some things you can’t control, right?”
Like Nicole on Mary Kills People Season 2 Episode 2, “The Connection,” Annie worries that Mary is helping people to the point of her own demise and not taking any help in return.
Luckily, Mary has a twin flame. And it’s not Ben.
Thank God.
When Brendan talks about “twin flames,” it seems like Mary is relating it to Ben. “There are certain people that just keep coming back into your life no matter what happens.”
I immediately relate it to Des, and rightly so, because he is the one that “swoops in.” The story is so much stronger this way, and the tricky way the writers lead us on makes it even better.
Having Ben be the knight in shining armor is obvious and cliche, but you also have doubts that Des will step up and do something. When he does, it mends their division and strengthens their bond.
Mary is not beholden to Des for this, in my opinion—it’s simply a moment in a partnership, a friendship, where one side pulls the weight for the other.
Caroline Dhavernas does a great job expressing Mary’s myriad of complex feelings, and her look to Des at the end of this episode when she realizes the gravity of what he has done for her is beautiful and affecting.
Dhavernas is always strong with this, but sometimes there are scenes where she just blows me away.
The ending may not be a cliffhanger this time, but there are still unraveling threads that pose more difficulties for Mary. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.
Stray Observations:
- I’m so glad Brendan is back!
- Naomi’s spiral is fascinating. She is a lot like Mary, and it will be interesting to see how it affects Jess who already has complicated feelings about her mom.
- “What you were gonna do, there’s no coming back from that.”
