Wow, was this scene intense.

When Kevin checks into rehab, he has a family therapy session with his Kate, Randall, and Rebecca. Old wounds resurface and hurtful words are spewed as Kevin leaves all his grievances out on the table.

Watching everyone’s distinct reaction to Kevin admitting that he felt like the fifth wheel of the family was amazing, especially because remembering the same events in their lives depends on their individual perspectives. This scene is exemplary of what family dramas are made of.

 8. It’s Deja’s world

This is less about a specific scene and moment and more about the entire episode itself.

On the season’s penultimate episode, the show took a risk by dedicating it to the perspective of a secondary character. But in doing so, it gave us a beautifully poetic episode with a standout performance from Lyric Ross.

It also cemented her role as one of the most interesting characters on the show.

9. Rebecca learns that Jack died

We agonized over learning how the Pearson patriarch lost his life since last year and finally got answers this season, and If we’re being honest, the whole episode is terrific and filled with strong scenes.

But, the best part of the Super Bowl special wasn’t the incredible house fire sequence or Jack’s acts of heroism, but it was Rebecca’s devastating reaction to his death.

In another knock out performance by Mandy Moore, Rebecca goes from denial to quick devastation when she sees Jack’s lifeless body for the first time.

10. The teen years of the trilogy

One of the best things about Season 2 was seeing more of the teenage Big Three.

The mid-season trilogy, in particular, gave us fascinating looks into the teenage years as all the events took place in one day.

The day is memorable for each kid for different reasons: For Kevin, it’s the day his football-playing dreams were crushed. For Kate, it’s when Rebecca learned she secretly applied to music school. And for Randall, it’s one of the first times he felt a sense of identity amongst black peers.

By just focusing on one day, it was cool to see how each of the teens was dealing with different things in their lives.

11. The flashforwards
Randall and Tess

Just as the mystery of Jack’s death closed, This Is Us hit us with a new twist.

For the first time, the show gave us a glimpse of the future — Tess is a twenty-something-year-old working as a social worker. And Randall, a little more grey and wrinkly, pays her a visit.

It was an incredibly exciting moment that opened doors for a world of possibilities looking forward.

12.  Kevin goes to Jack’s tree

With Jack being the last name on his list of people to make amends with, Kevin goes to the tree where they scattered some of Jack’s ashes, and he pours his heart out.

Kevin: I wanted to come here and stop avoiding you, just talk to you. And tell you that I’m sorry, and tell you I’m going I’ll do better. If it’s the last thing I do, I’m going to make you proud of me. Ok? I swear it. I’m going to make you proud of me.

Kevin’s remorse over his difficult relationship with Jack weighed heavy on him throughout Season 2, and this moving scene provided some much-needed catharsis.
