One Day at a Time. Season 2. Episode 9.

We know that this show addresses some hard-hitting issues, but on One Day at a Time Season 2 Episode 9, “Hello, Penelope,” we get to see the brilliance in how they do.

We watch Penelope’s progression from stopping her going to group therapy, to outbursts, to not wanting to get out of bed, and then the agonizing moment of admitting she had suicidal thoughts in her dialogue with Schneider.

With the superb writing and the exceptionally poignant acting by Justina Machado at the forefront, this is the episode that leaves a lasting impression.

Elena doesn’t often get dotted on by her mother or grandmother, so this cute moment when Syd creates a song and dance to ask Elena to the dance is a welcomed surprise.

Syd is a non-binary character, which is discussed on a previous episode and is an added bonus as to what we love about the show. Also, how cute is #Sylena by the way?

15. Mother versus Daughter

One Day at a Time. Season 2. Episode 12.

On One Day at a Time Season 2 Episode 12, “Citizen Lydia,” we witness that Penelope has broken up with Max because he wants children and Penelope doesn’t want any more. When she comes home to let her family know,  Lydia voices that she wholeheartedly disagrees with and it turns into a pretty heated discussion.

Both Lydia and Penelope are impassioned with their viewpoints. It doesn’t cool down until Lydia backs down and walks away from the fight, but not before she lets Penelope know her decision is idiotic. Justina Machado and Rita Moreno are electrifying in this scene and leads to a shocking final moment the next morning.

On the season finale, there is a build-up of beautiful monologues from the different family members and friends.

It starts off light with Alex conversing in on gossip, then follows with both Schneider and Elena’s monologues which gave us a lot of insight into their relationships with Lydia and their history. Lastly, Penelope’s gut-wrenching reflection of her and Lydia’s relationship and recent argument.
