The Magicians Roundtable: Be The Penny
Penny’s death affects everyone differently on The Magicians Season 3 Episode 4, “Be The Penny.”
While Kady is spiraling at the loss of Penny and getting help from Julia, Eliot is escaping from a pair of cannibals with Fray and Fen. Meanwhile, Margo is still on course for Fillory, planning her battle with the fairy queen when they arrive.
Tell-Tale TV writers Christina Cerutti and Cade Taylor, joined by Starry Constellation Magazine writer Lisa Steinberg, discuss the episode below.

- Cade Taylor (@cadehtaylor)

1. Do you still believe that Fray is Eliot and Fen’s daughter? She was a little too mad at Eliot not telling her what the key is for.
Lisa: I do think she is their daughter right now. Yes, she is shifty and shady, but there haven’t been enough clues to shed more doubt at this time in my opinion.
Christina: I’m not sure. I’d like to think so because it seems like she is really growing attached to Eliot and Fen. Fray for sure has a lot of secrets but I love this little trios family moments, and I hope it’s all real.
Cade: I have very mixed feelings towards Fray. I still think that her being Eliot and Fen’s daughter could be some sort of illusion from the fairy queen.

2. Why do you think Irene had fairy’s in her house and lied about them being magic?
Lisa: I am not sure. Everyone and everything is shrouded in secrecy. I can’t hypothesis about it right now.
Christina: I’m thinking the fairy’s are either blackmailing Irene or she’s working with them in some way, maybe she made a deal with them too.
Cade: We don’t know much about Irene, but I don’t get a good vibe from her. I feel like she could be working with them to keep the magic, or the feeling of magic, going in her life.

3. What do you think is going to happen when Margo get’s back to the fairy queen?
Lisa: Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and Margo has been f*cked over far too much by the Fairy Queen. Margo is on a mission to save her kingdom and stop the fairy queen; I think she’ll do whatever it takes to make her pay. And I am most definitely here for it!
Christina: I know Margo can take care of herself. She lost an eye, and she’s grown into this incredible leader. The fairy queen probably won’t be pleased with her, but it’s nothing our Queen Margo can’t manage. Nevertheless, she will persist.
Cade: I hope that Margo’s little speech isn’t all talk and she puts her money where her mouth is. Margo is the badass of Fillory, and earth let’s be honest, and if anyone is going to take down the fairy queen, it should be Margo.

4. What do you think happened to the librarians? Why were the cannibals eating them?
Lisa: I wish I had a good answer, but they are so secretive. I can’t begin to think the root of the cannibal’s hunger games.
Christina: They’re so secretive, so I really don’t know. This show is always filled with so many surprises. I mean assumingly the cannibals were eating them because they were desperate for food and they saw an opportunity.
Cade: I wouldn’t even know where to begin on what could have happened to the librarians, but whatever it was it can’t be good if cannibals are eating the last of them.

5. Do you think that Kady has forgiven Julia yet?
Lisa: I don’t think she has fully forgiven her. Kady has had such an incredibly tough upbringing but there is always something going on, so it’s hard to process emotions.
I think she will in time but when things slow down, if ever, she’ll be a bottomless well of emotion.
Christina: I don’t think Kady has forgiven her all the way. Kady and Julia have been through a lot together, and they became very close. Which, I think it’s why Kady is so hesitant with her; She really let down her walls with Julia so to let them down again will be very difficult.
Eventually, I hope they can work everything out.
Cade: Kady has some horrible thing happening in her life at almost every moment and I think she’s too engulfed in those feelings to try to work on any others.
I hope that by the end of the season they can get back to a stable place, with a friendship.

6. If you were Hyman Cooper and stuck in the halls of Brakebills forever what would you do?
Lisa: Pull a lot of pranks! He reminds me of Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter but a lot more skeezy. I’d learn as much information as I could and definitely get in whatever giggles I could too.
Christina: I would do exactly what Hyman was doing and watch all of the drama unfold. I would also become different objects to scare people, but unlike Hyman, I wouldn’t give up on finding a way back to my body or even a different body.
Cade: I would do just as Hyman is doing – watch the people around me. Hyman basically has his own live TV show happening before his very eyes. But I agree with Christina, I wouldn’t give up on trying to find my body.
If I could project myself into objects I’d probably do a little haunting in my spare time.
