The Mick Review: The Church (Season 2 Episode 14)

Reviews, The Mick

On The Mick Season 2 Episode 14, “The Church” Alba, Ben, and Mickey (?) find God… sort of.

As expected, an episode of The Mick about church is really, really funny.

“The Church” covers all the religious bases. We’ve got hardcore believers, middle-of-the-road church-goers, and total deniers.

It’s the breakdown of who’s who that takes things to the next level.

Ben as the skeptic is probably his funniest role yet (and that’s really saying something). The scene where Jimmy tells him God is in the candle and Ben replies by wordlessly blowing it out is everything. Everything.

Chip as a new believer is also perfect. He’s obsessed with Father Zach (who is the embodiment of all things hip religion) in a very teenybopper sort of way. It’s so Chip.

“The Church” doesn’t advance any plot points, it teaches us zero lessons, and it probably offends a lot of people. It’s the perfect twenty-some minutes of sitcom comedy I’ve seen in a while.

Something I really appreciate about The Mick is that it, every so often, presents an episode that can stand alone. I love following a storyline as much as the next person, but there’s something to be said about pure comedy escapism. You don’t have to know anything about anything to enjoy “The Church.”

For one thing, there’s a lot to relate to. Sabrina and Jimmy care enough to know that it’s not super great that Ben doesn’t believe in anything at his age. Their quest to prove that God exists hits all the classic notes.

Ben’s got answers, though. A beautiful sunset with colors that can’t be explained? Smog. Music that transcends time and place? Doesn’t sound that great.

Plus, hungover Mickey sitting between Alba and Father Zach is all of us dealing with overly enthusiastic people.

The face she makes is universal.

There’s also something to be said about just laughing. “The Church” could easily have made some big stand about second chances, or a greater being, or even helping out a friend in need.

Instead, it just makes us laugh.

On the tail end of a looong January and mid epic flu season, that’s probably what we all needed.

In the spirit of that, here are a few of my favorite funny moments:

  • Alba’s demands to go to Promises Malibu. It sounds warm there so… I’d jump on that bandwagon.
  • Father Zach’s tattoos. And his basketball tricks. And he’s two beers. He’s just perfect.
  • Ben – “alright, I’ll stare at the smog.” This kid really knows how to deliver deadpan.
  • Mickey tattling on Father Zach and then quickly resorting to Porsche bribery. Also when she asks if the drink is a “trick.”
  • Mickey “I’m the serpent he’s talking about.”
  • Ben – “and now I’m going to be the Pope when I grow up!”
