The Mick Review: The Dump (Season 2 Episode 13)

Reviews, The Mick

On The Mick Season 3 Episode 13, “The Dump,” the classic kid-lost-during-fieldtrip story gets a hilarious twist.

Something The Mick is great at is taking classic sitcom storylines and changing them up a bit. “The Dump” is probably the best example of this yet.

The show consistently does such a nice job of setting things up and then doing the unexpected at the last minute. I think we all assumed someone was lost when Alba and Mickey had to count the kids on the bus.

But of course not. This is The Mick. Mickey and Alba have gained a child instead of losing one.

My only problem with this episode is that it’s really difficult to buy that Mickey and Alba would be allowed to chaperone a field trip alone. For one, they haven’t proven to be very upstanding parents. Plus, doesn’t a teacher always go along?

It isn’t a big deal, but I think a teacher could have been pretty easily inserted into “The Dump” without throwing things off too much.

That aside, Alba and Mickey dealing with “Dump” is hilarious.

Chip and Sabrina are also pretty great with Colonel. Their interactions give us just enough growth to keep “The Dump” from being stagnant.

This is also a great example of how balanced The Mick is. I think a lot of shows would bend to the sappy desire to see Chip give Colonel his shoes. The Mick doesn’t – which is true to the humor of the show and who Chip is. He can’t grow that much.

I am a bit surprised, however, that Jimmy doesn’t feature more in this episode. At first, this bothered me. But, after letting it sink in a bit, I think I’m glad.

The Mick is good at slow-playing important plot points. The show does a nice job of balancing emotion and comedy internally in episodes, but also across the arch of several episodes.

Jimmy and Mickey’s reconciliation was pretty emotional, so having him take a backseat for an episode makes sense.

Plus, I just like knowing he’s there.

Another example of consistency with The Mick is that every episode has one moment so cringe-worthy that I have to look away. “The Dump’s” moment is when Mickey steps on the needle.

“The Dump” isn’t a particularly notable episode, but it is funny. It also reminds us what a well made show The Mick is. Sometimes I really like how simple it can be.

Other Random Thoughts:

  • Chip is totally a kid who would wait in some crazy line for shoes
  • Sabrina explaining why people give things to The Colonel makes me LOL: “people are so stupid… or patriotic, I guess.”
  • So does Alba’s “isn’t a kidnapper without demands just a child molester?”
  • I like how much Ben loves the dump
  • The note “Dump” gets left with is fabulous
