Preview: The Goldbergs: 1990-Something Spinoff Special
The Goldbergs: 1990-Something takes what The Goldbergs does for the 80s and applies the same formula to the 90s in this spinoff special. Adam F. Goldberg, who uses his own childhood for fodder on The Goldbergs, offers up his comedic take on the decade, using both new and familiar faces.
Tim Meadows returns as Mr. Glascott in a new role at William Penn Academy. As Head of School, Glascott clashes with the old-school teachers, including Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen) and Mrs. Cinoman (Ana Gasteyer). He brings in reinforcements in the form of his no-nonsense sister, Lucy (Nia Long).
TIM MEADOWS, NIA LONG
Along with Lucy, comes her two daughters, Felicia (Rachel Crow) and Gigi (Summer Parker). They navigate the halls of William Penn and the weirdness of life in the 90s just like the Goldberg kids did before them. Octavia Spencer voices narration as the adult Felicia as Patton Oswalt does for Adam on The Goldbergs. Wendi McClendon-Covey makes an appearance as smother Beverly Goldberg to make sure the school is running okay without her, or just to keep Glascott on his toes.
Goldberg and Co. already do a great job of dissecting the 80s in the form of a family sitcom with punchy dialogue and fun performances. Seeing this through the lens of the 90s with Glascott and his family is sure to be just as nostalgic and entertaining.
The 1990s present a whole new array of challenges for these teenagers, parents, and teachers of The Goldbergs universe. By placing Glascott at the center, Goldberg focuses on the teachers and their impact on students and families. “My goal was to make a positive, inspiring show about the amazing teachers I had growing up. Comedies about teachers always paint them as jaded, tortured souls, when in fact they’re heroes dedicated to changing lives,” Goldberg said.
