17 Most Shocking TV Moments of 2017
7. The Wrong “Best Picture” Winner is Announced (The Oscars)

Audiences everywhere were stunned when La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz took the microphone back and said “There’s a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture.” Watching that moment live, there was confusion and chaos, followed by cheers of joy and thankfulness.
Director Barry Jenkins was so stunned that he barely made it through his acceptance speech. It was by far the most epic flub ever to happen in Oscar history.
8. Stefan Sacrifices Himself in Damon’s Place (The Vampire Diaries)

Throughout The Vampire Diaries‘ long run, Stefan and Damon Salvatore often switched off in their roles as the “good” brother and the “bad” brother. In the supernatural drama’s final season, this dichotomy was in full force, as first Damon lost himself to the darkness and then Stefan did.
But by the end, they’d both recovered — long enough to witness the imminent destruction of Mystic Falls, thanks to Katherine Pierce. Knowing that one of them needed to make the ultimate sacrifice to destroy Katherine and Hell once and for all. While Damon was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice so that Stefan (as a human) could live out his final days with his brand-new wife Caroline, Stefan wasn’t having that.
Instead, he cured Damon with his own blood and pushed him to safety, willingly dying with Katherine in the hellfire and allowing Damon to live out a human life with an awakened Elena. It was poetic and beautiful and absolutely heartbreaking.
9. Wynonna Has a Baby (Wynonna Earp)

In Wynonna Earp Season 2, one of the most shocking moments was on Episode 5 where we find out that Wynonna is pregnant. But even more surprising was the fact that Melanie Scrofano, Emily Andras, and the rest of the cast and crew kept this a secret for as long as they did.
How the show worked in the pregnancy was amazing, and made all the moms out there cheer when we got to see a pregnant badass superhero.
10. Everyone Finds Out That Zombies Exist (iZombie)

The entire premise of iZombie was that zombies are real and (almost) nobody knows about them. Liv Moore was the first zombie we met, but we quickly found out that there were many more of the undead lurking around and hiding their secret.
Things escalated quickly, beginning with the Season 2 finale reveal that there was a private military contractor with a secret zombie army, preparing for the day they’d need to fight for their lives when humans would find out about their existence and inevitably try to kill them.
But the game-changing twist came about on the final episode of iZombie Season 3. Fillmore-Graves’ plan to turn more humans into zombies was revealed after Liv and the gang failed to stop it and Liv convinced Johnny Frost to come clean about the existence of zombies to the world on live TV.
Now, everyone knows that zombies are real, and the upcoming Season 4 will tackle a whole new (kinda scary) iZombie world.
11. The Identity of A.D. Is Finally Revealed (Pretty Little Liars)

There have been so many reveals on Pretty Little Liars throughout the years, but with the last episode, fans were relieved to finally have an answer regarding the biggest bad the series had ever seen. The series finale (Pretty Little Liars Season 7 Episode 20 “Til DeAth Do Us Part”) tried to fake out fans early on, but eventually gave us the real answer to the identity of A.D.: Alex Drake.
The finale wove the story of Spencer Hastings’ long-lost twin and her connection with Charlotte and Wren. The reveal answered many questions and served as a solid explanation for some of Spencer’s strange behavior. Still, despite having the final answer, we still kind of want to know how Alex built that entire underground complex in such a short period of time.
12. Carl is Bitten (The Walking Dead)

The winter finale of The Walking Dead Season 8 gave us the reveal that Carl Grimes, son of the series’ protagonist Rick Grimes, had been bitten by a walker and would die. While we haven’t yet actually seen Carl die, his portrayer Chandler Riggs confirmed on social media that he is leaving the show and that his character is a goner, to the distress of many fans.
While The Walking Dead has never been a show that’s shy about killing off major, fan-favorite characters, Carl’s impending death was still a shock — largely because Rick’s son is still alive, well, and an importance figure in the ongoing comic book series on which the show is based.
It will be interesting to see how the show adapts Carl’s comics storylines sans Carl, but needless to say, this was a wholly unexpected and shocking twist.
