The Walking Dead Review: Some Guy (Season 8 Episode 4)

Reviews, The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 4, “Some Guy,” is decent, but we’re still stuck on an everlasting day as the characters we know are still fighting the Saviors in never-ending battles.

Ezekiel is the focus of the episode and although it starts out as a bit eye-roll inducing, The Walking Dead quickly cuts from a rousing speech to utter devastation on the battlefield.

On The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 3 “Monsters,” we see the Kingdom’s soldiers attacked by a spray of bullets from another batch of Saviors who are lurking around. They have the guns, but not where Daryl and Rick were looking for them.

“Some Guy” opens with King Ezekiel getting ready to greet his people and to give them a speech before many of the Kingdom dwellers leave to face the Saviors.

They all cheer for him as they think that they will be victorious. At Ezekiel’s self-indulgent monologue, I was thought “Must I watch this episode?” Part of my annoyance stemmed from the fact that we’re still on the same day and now we were being shown what happened before the fight against the Saviors.

Another factor of the opening which bothered me is that The Walking Dead likes to stop the action with speeches or out-of-place conversations.

But then we see all the broken bodies on a silent field as Ezekiel reaches out from underneath soldiers who died to protect him. The contrast of hope and helplessness is evident in the cold open.

“Some Guy” instantly becomes a lot more interesting.

Ezekiel watches in horror as his fellow soldiers re-animate. It’s still thrilling to watch the dead rise again. The Walking Dead has been excelling in utilizing the walkers, whether it has been to increase viewers’ heart rates or to use them as tactical devices in warfare.

The walkers on “Some Guy,” are amazing, especially those that are contaminated by hazardous waste.

So. Gross.

“Some Guy” is contained to Ezekiel, Carol, and Jerry with a brief (but fun) appearance of Daryl and Rick. My biggest issue with the episode is that once again, it could have been combined with another episode.

There is certainly a change now in Ezekiel as he has lost many soldiers in his kingdom, and the one thing that cemented his role as king—Shiva. I appreciate the character change in Ezekiel, but there are still moments that feel out of place.

The random Savior who looks like Jeffrey Dahmer and who tortures Ezekiel shortly is a bad choice. He comes out of nowhere and then spouts off at Ezekiel about how much he sucks and then is chopped in half by Jerry.

It would have been better to see Ezekiel hobble along on his own trying to escape the dead.

I am so happy that Jerry survived by the way. We don’t see him enough but when we do, he’s always a delight.

I did expect the random Savior to take Ezekiel to Negan, but thankfully that didn’t happen.

Carol, who conducts her own badassery against the Saviors, gives up the guns to them to help Ezekiel and Jerry who have a small horde of walkers upon them.

Carol is unable to stop the Saviors with the guns but she says that the guys with the guns won’t get far.

Cut to Daryl and Rick in hot pursuit.

The chase is enjoyable and provides some heightened tension. Of course, Daryl and Rick are going to be okay, but the chase is still thrilling.

However, it is out of place.

Where did Daryl and Rick come from? And how did Carol see them or know that they were going to intercept the Saviors?

It’s just weird that those two show up for like, five minutes.

As “Some Guy” continued, I knew it would only be a matter of time before Ezekiel uttered the words, “I’m just some guy.”

But, the utterance is powerful. Ezekiel created the king persona. People were loyal to him until the very end and gave their lives freely for him.

But he is just some guy. And he didn’t mean for his kingdom to crumble at his expense.

Overall, “Some Guy,” is the best episode of Season 8 so far. It has tension, very cool zombie effects, a car chase, and much-needed character development.
