The Mick Review: The Teacher (Season 2 Episode 8)
On The Mick Season 2 Episode 8, “The Teacher,” Mickey and Sabrina both fall for a teacher and it’s even more uncomfortable than it sounds.
I wish I could watch The Mick in a vacuum. I find it more consistently entertaining than maybe any other show I’ve ever watched. But… it doesn’t exist in a vacuum. A few weeks ago I wrote about the show going too far with violence in a violent world.
With “The Teacher,” I’m just a little unsure how to feel about Mickey sounding the alarm on being victimized by a man she hasn’t been victimized by.

On the whole, this episode is funny. Sabrina has a crush on her poetry teacher and Mickey sets out to put a stop to it. Then she accidentally sleeps with him.
That’s funny.
It’s made even more hilarious by the revelation that Mickey slept with a janitor when she was in school. No one believed her then, either.
That’s really funny.
Then Mickey goes crazy and runs over teacher’s scooter.
That’s really, really funny.

The problem is, within this objectively funny storyline are just a few instances where Mickey seems to be making fun of (or at least co-opting) the language that we are currently seeing women use to call out real predators.
This makes me feel gross.
I really don’t know how else to put it. I want to find this episode funny, but I more want people to take women seriously when they make these accusations.
The scene where Mickey and Sabrina stand on stage with hands raised falls totally flat for me.

It’s not funny.
I genuinely appreciate comedy that pushes the envelope. There is real value in shining a light on the things that make us feel uncomfortable, and there is real value in facing head on what is hardest to joke about.
This doesn’t feel like that, though.
It honestly just feels tone deaf.

I’m also more than a little disappointed that Jimmy and Mickey’s relationship is completely ignored this week. On The Mick Season 2 Episode 7, “The Homecoming,” it felt like we were going deeper and this week we don’t get anything about it at all.
I hope the show will eventually return to that storyline. I know Mickey’s supposed to be a jerk, but I need her to be a little human to be able to keep watching this show.

Things that do make me happy:
- Sabrina (on her ‘growth’ from liking muscles to academics) — “I can grate cheese on Brain’s brains.”
- Chip’s Gucci belt – now there’s a good example of using comedy to call something out
- Jimmy to Chip – “I look at you and I see nothing.”
- Both Ben and Sabrina’s poems are pretty epic
I hope that I can watch the next episode of The Mick without feeling like I don’t know how to feel. Until then, I guess I’m just “mad mysterious.”
