Empire Review: The Fool (Season 4 Episode 5)
On Empire season 4 episode 5, “The Fool,” we get Lucious back just in the nick of time.
I mean, seriously.
Most of this episode feels like mid-season filler. In fact, without the last four minutes or so, it’s not a great episode.
But, those four minutes make all the difference.

I have to hand it to Empire that the timing of this episode is perfection. Just as I’m deciding that I’m officially over Dwight and Claudia, Lucious sneaks back in.
It has to be said, though, that the painting scene is absolutely ridiculous. Just… absurd.
Did I have a stroke, or do they intertwine their hands and start dancing?
Come. On.

I’m so relieved, however, that Lucious remembers – not only his past – but also his love for Cookie, that I’m going to let it slide.
This episode doesn’t give us much, but what it does give us is gold.
Lucious is back and I’m just so excited.
Lord knows, though, that Claudia isn’t going to go without a fight. Did anyone else LOL when she admits that what she’s doing “might” be considered unethical by some?
Um, you think, Claudia?
I’d love to say goodbye to her forever, but you just know she’s going to cause some trouble somewhere. The list of women out to destroy Lucious just keeps on growing.
Probably my favorite thing about this episode is the tiny cliffhanger they give us. We have to wait for next week to see how Cookie reacts when she realizes she has Lucious back.

I know I should be mad at him, but I just want them to be in love!
Other stuff is simmering, too, but I’m having trouble paying attention.
For one thing, who is this police officer hanging around Dre and what in the world is her game plan?
Either she’s playing him for info (and totally failing) or she is comfortable sleeping with someone she thinks likely tried to kill his own father.
Let that sink in.
I also basically have to look away whenever Jamal comes on screen. He’s hurtling toward another heartbreak and it’s just killing me. Empire needs to rip the bandaid on that one already.
I’m also super nervous for Hakeem. I totally understand his desire to make a run for it. Here’s to hoping that Lucious is going to shut down all of this stupid Angelo crap once and for all.

If I’m being honest, most of this episode is boring to me. The last few minutes, however, have gotten me majorly excited for what’s to come.
