The Mick Review: The Hotel (Season 2 Episode 1)
On The Mick Season 2 Episode 1, “The Hotel” the Pembertons are living it up at a five-star hotel… until they aren’t.
You guys, I missed Micky.
I’ve got to be honest, when the Pembertons end up at a five-star hotel and then almost immediately get downgraded by Barry-the-money-man to a gross hotel (or, to a regular person, what looks like a pretty okay hotel) I get concerned that this season is going to be a little Schitt’s Creek-ish. (Not that I don’t love Schitt’s Creek, but, you know).

I’ll admit, I lost faith for a second there.
But I shouldn’t have doubted The Mick.
Because of course hilarity ensues.
Something I really love about The Mick is that the characters tend to pair off and get into simultaneous trouble.
I mean, this week we’ve got Micky and Sabrina trying to save their money, Chip and Jimmy living a fake life of luxury (soaking wet and in robes), and Ben casually trying to exorcise Alba.
Yes, Ben performs an exorcism.

That premise alone is hilarious to me, but The Mick takes it up a notch by making Ben’s interpretation of an exorcism be reading the entire Bible to Alba while she’s tied up to the bed posts.
Like, what?
Literally, all we see of Ben this week is him reading the beginning and end of the Bible. Brilliant.
Plus, Jimmy and Chip as a team is new and awesome. When Chip tells his friends he’s still at the nice hotel he has to take Jimmy up on his help. You know this is hard for Chip. Naturally, Jimmy’s help is basically explaining that if you walk around wet and in a robe at a nice hotel, no one questions it. He’s not wrong.
Also, Jimmy directing Chip’s Snapchat stories is the scene I didn’t know I needed.
However, Micky (as usual) steals the show by planning to blackmail Barry by hiring an escort (and then a male prostitute/junky when that doesn’t work) to seduce him. The plan is to then to threaten Barry with showing the pics of the hookup to his wife.

Hot tip — if you’re planning something like this, make sure the dude has a wife first.
I hate to admit it, but I doubted The Mick not once, but twice during “The Hotel.”
For a second there I thought the episode was going to end with Sabrina (finally) telling Micky she respects her. This seemed like a real bummer way to end the season opener.
Barry coming back at the end and letting them know that he’s wifeless (and thus, blackmail proof) is just the sort of twist I should have assumed was coming. It’s just the sort of twist that makes The Mick so good.

I also appreciate that this wasn’t really a recap episode. I mean, the Pemberton’s do end up living in the charred shell of their old home, but we are not otherwise forced to unnecessarily relive last season.
Which makes me look forward to this season even more.
Random thoughts:
- I can’t get over Ben thinking an exorcism is just reading the Bible. Give whoever thought of that a raise.
- Chip trying to convince his friends that he still lives at the nice hotel: “I’m watching so much porn, I’m probably getting unrealistic expectations about women in relationships.”
- Sabrina being starstruck by the pretty escort is too much.
- You’ve not seen a makeover montage until you’ve seen a makeover montage that involves a fish pedicure and a male sex worker.
- Are Jimmy and Chip friends now? That’s not going to be good for Micky.
