The Big Bang Theory Review: The Proposal Proposal (Season 11 Episode 1)

Reviews, The Big Bang Theory

On The Big Bang Theory Season 11 Episode 1, “The Proposal Proposal,” the big cliffhanger from the finale of season 10 is solved as Amy gives her answer to Sheldon’s proposal.

SHE! SAID! YES!

It’s been over three months since The Big Bang Theory left us with a major cliffhanger and for a lot of that time I have been feeling like Sheldon on the gif above. While his proposal to Amy is expected, it was a shocking moment nevertheless, and one I have been waiting to see solved since the season 10 finale.

Sheldon: I realized that Amy was the only woman I wanted to kiss for the rest of my life.

Though Amy’s answer is totally expected (I, in fact, was so confident of it that I already drafted parts of this review last night before watching the episode), the moment Sheldon tells Leonard and Penny on the phone that Amy said “yes” unexpectedly made me tear up.

I guess I have been watching this show for such a long time that in many ways these characters are more than just fictional characters for me. Perhaps that is why major moments in their lives tend to make me emotional.

In addition to revealing Amy’s answer to the proposal, the season 11 premiere brings on another set of life-changing news — Bernadette and Howard are going to have another baby.

One of the best things about this episode, without a doubt, is the honesty with which Bernadette and Howard react to the pregnancy. Howard’s initial reaction is a whole lot of “no’s” followed by questions and worry, while Bernadette’s initial shock is followed by disbelief and concern.

When pregnancies of people who are in love and in a stable relationship are revealed, it often feels like everything is perfect and magical. Obviously, that can sometimes be the case, especially if the couple in question is one that has been wanting to get pregnant for a while and the storylines introduced on the show have heavily focused on that.

That has not been the case with Howard and Bernadette and I must admit that the pregnancy came as a big surprise for me. What will it add to the story? How will this news change the relationship of Howard and Bernadette?

I have no doubt about the fact that, eventually, the baby will be very much wanted and loved. Despite that, the initial reaction and the worry both Bernadette and Howard share feels honest and real, and I predict that on the upcoming episodes they will continue to struggle with questions related to finances, work, and the direction they want to take with their growing family.

On my review for the season 10 finale, “The Long Distance Dissonance,” I questioned whether Sheldon is going to tell Amy about the surprise kiss with Ramona. Rather than keeping the kiss a secret, and thus making it into a thing that would loom over the happiness of Amy and Sheldon, I appreciate the fact that it’s instantly brought up and solved by the end of the episode.

I am sure there will be a lot of drama and complications ahead before Amy and Sheldon say “I do,” and I believe that the kiss with Ramona won’t be really needed as a dramatic device.

For example, wedding planning will likely become an element the show utilizes both for drama and for laughs on the upcoming episodes. In fact, speculations about the wedding start right after Amy says “yes” — Sheldon tells her mother that there won’t be a church wedding while Penny wonders whether Sheldon wants to have a “weird Star Trek wedding.”

I am all for a “weird Star Trek wedding”, but I am pretty sure that is not what Amy wants. It will definitely be interesting to see what kind of a wedding Sheldon and Amy eventually end up having.

From season 10 some of my favorite episodes were those focused on Raj and I am really looking forward to seeing how season 11 approaches his story.

If I have to name one thing I would LOVE to see on season 11, it would be for Raj to finally find the kind of romantic happiness he’s been yearning for.

Thus, my wish is that The Big Bang Theory is finally able to move away from treating Raj as a hilarious lonely man who always fails romantically, into something that allows Raj to be happy. Raj being happy does not mean that he could not be funny — the humor could just be ignited from something else than Raj’s bitterness.

Stray Thoughts:

  • Am I the only one who thought Sheldon was going to blurt out “Bazinga” during the proposal, thus turning it into a joke?
  • Does Leonard want to have a baby? The whole cake and balloons thing right after Bernadette tells Leonard and Penny that they should get pregnant gave me a hunch that Leonard might be ready to start a family. Obviously, I am now interested in what Penny thinks about that.
