Broad City Review: Just the Tips (Season 4 Episode 3)
On Broad City Season 4 Episode 3, “Just the Tips,” Ilana and Abbi show us why the phrase, “just the tip” is problematic in more ways than one.
Ilana thought that tips and meaningless sex would fill the space Lincoln held in her heart. Abbi realizes that she can’t just tip-in a rushed relationship over a story that has yet to be written (a joke for my book lovers.)
And Jaimé finally comes to the conclusion that cutting the tip off of his little man will be a good trade-off if it means he can have more sex with less penile maintenance.
As you can tell, this episode’s theme centers around sex. The perfect thematic placement when you take into consideration that Broad City Season 4 Episode 2, “Twaining Day,” centered around plan Bs after sex.
Broad City‘s PSA: Think ahead before you make decisions, especially potentially life-changing ones like sex. The girls might not adhere to this policy but that’s okay.
Do as they strategically order episodes, not as they do.
We finally get to see one of the most exciting scenes from the season 4 trailer: the Ilana and Lincoln reunion! I’m excited that Broad City decides to just jump into Ilana’s unresolved feelings about her break-up with Lincoln without unnecessary build-up.
This episode doesn’t really introduce him back into the show as a recurring or regular character, nor does it make my dreams of Ilana and Lincoln getting back together a viable hope. However, it plays so well into why I love Ilana and Lincoln together that I’m still an extremely happy camper.
Lincoln knows his ex-girl. Before he smells her in the restroom, he knows exactly what her “shit my leotard” face looks like. I mean, how romantic is that?!
He even goes out of his way to help her because he still cares, and I’m sure a part of him does miss her. Broad City season 4 episode 3 doesn’t give any hint that they would ever get back together but my Ilana/Lincoln heart is still soaring nonetheless.
Ilana realizing that she and Lincoln were much more than just friends-with-benefits who spend a lot of time together, makes me want to throw on my party hat and spray confetti.
Broad City season 3 spent all season trying to lead Ilana to that conclusion but when Ilana finally begins to grasp this, her and Lincoln break up. And, instead of truly dealing with it, she immediately looks for a new partner to cover her rejection.
Seeing Lincoln content without her in season 4 finally brings back the feelings that she has been trying to hide and I’m completely here for it.
Speaking of hidden feelings, Abbi also finally comes to a much-needed realization this episode.
Since Broad City season 1, Abbi has been chasing one pipe dream after the next, when all she has really wanted is the pipe. She knows this subconsciously. But Trey commenting on that fact reflexively makes her want to over-compensate with the paramedic guy.
The knee-jerk reaction for women to think long-lasting relationships are necessary take over her. Thank goodness it only lasted one episode. Abbi doesn’t know what she wants and that’s okay. It’s always been okay.
It only becomes an issue when you lead others on about your indecision. This is why Trey has completely valid feelings in being hurt by Abbi, but why Trey doesn’t have the right to pass judgment on her capacity to have a long relationship.
Not cool, dude.
Oh and hoagie-choking-guy: you’re not cool either. There’s no way you made it this far into adulthood without learning how to chew and swallow properly.
Ilana: “Sometimes, I literally hate humanity.”
Same, Ilana. Same.
Stray Observations:
- The Abbi/Bevers relationship is super cute this season.
- Did anyone catch Ilana and Jaimé’s shoutout to Narcos with the “Colombian problem” comment? For those that don’t know: the actor who plays Jaimé, Arturo Castro, plays David Rodriguez in Narcos Season 3.
- When Ilana says she is a lot more mature now than when her and Lincoln broke up, Lincoln looks both parts happy for her and aroused. I don’t know which reaction makes me more happy.
