Younger Review: The Incident at Pound Ridge (Season 4 Episode 9)
After a disappointing episode with “The Gelato and the Pube,” Younger is back in fine form with Season 4 Episode 9 “The Incident at Pound Ridge.” Not only are there laugh-out-loud moments, but it feels like there is more at stake for Liza and Charles than there was previously.
Also, Josh punches Charles.
He might be lovey-dovey with Clare, but he’s certainly not over Liza yet and it adds some heightened tension at the Empirical picnic. There’s also something oddly satisfying about the punch because I’m consistently torn between Team Josh and Team Charles.

We spend some time exploring Josh and Clare’s new relationship and well, Clare is the total package. She’s funny, smart, pretty, and works in gaming. She has also never had jalapenos before which makes for a hilarious bit later in the episode.
Clare is far more likable than Montana and I guess that we’re supposed to be happy for Josh that he’s found someone new. Josh still has to be a part of the Younger fabric, but he can’t just be left pining for Liza.
Although, the look on his face when he meets Charles is perfection. You can feel him seething.
Josh also tells Kelsey that he saw Charles and Liza kissing the night he was going to propose. I had forgotten that Kelsey has no idea about what’s going on between Charles and Liza.
When Kelsey warns Liza to not sleep with Charles because it could ruin everything, including Millennial, Liza downplays her relationship with Charles.
With “The Gelato and the Pube,” I felt like some of the sexual tension between Liza and Charles had been deflated and that Charles was making too many declarations too readily.
“The Incident at Pound Ridge” continues to show that Charles wants a relationship with Liza, but it’s much more complicated than just making out in his office. Charles tells Liza to spend the night which sends out some seriously sexy vibes.
Of course, Liza can’t.
Charles confides in his friend that he won’t be getting back with Pauline because “there’s someone else.” His friend’s wife is best friends with Pauline, so we know that won’t stay a secret.
To complicate things further, Pauline tries grilling Liza about Charles’ “someone else” which Liza dodges quite well. And then Charles’ daughters seem just as excited to see Liza as they are to see Pauline.
There’s a look that Pauline gives Liza which makes me think that things will turn very nasty when she inevitably finds out about Charles and Liza.
Liza does need to take Kelsey’s warning into consideration as well. Obviously, Kelsey doesn’t know how strongly Liza feels about Charles. Perhaps Liza should have already been honest with Kelsey about her feelings for Charles. I imagine Kelsey will feel hurt by Liza once again for not being truthful.

And then, there is still the question of how will Charles feel when he does find out about Liza’s lie? It has to come out eventually, right?!
There are only three episodes of this season left. Will Charles find something out about Liza? Will Josh and Liza have a rekindling of their relationship? Will Kelsey ever see Zane again? How many more amazing earring/necklace combos will Diana have?
Overall, “The Incident at Pound Ridge” is a highly satisfying and enjoyable episode. It has some very funny moments, it pushes the story further, and creates some more tension and stakes in regards to Liza’s relationship to Charles.
Final Notes:
- Can I please have a friend like Kelsey who can get me a deal and an advance likethat.
- Diana taking a bite of a corndog—and spitting it out is comedy gold.
- No Lauren or Maggie on this episode—we need another girl’s night soon.
- Is anyone else relieved that Kelsey and Josh’s kiss was a one-time thing and never to be thought of again?
- Finally, the episode has come where I like everything Liza wears!
