Younger Review: A Close Shave (Season 4 Episode 6)
Wow, what an episode! Younger Season 4 Episode 6 “A Close Shave,” is a great half hour of TV full of drama, laughter, revelations, and um, mustaches.
“A Close Shave” nearly has it all except, sadly, no Josh. However, there is plenty of Diana plus some much-needed Maggie.
And then there’s that ending.
Who knew that from the way “A Close Shave” began that the episode would end the way it did?
The episode starts at a book launch for a book about a dog and his philosophy. The author is the one who tried to blackmail Liza about her age.
Apparently, millennials really want to read books about what their pets think, and is, therefore, a huge success.
The cold open seems light on plot, like much of the previous episode of Younger, “The Gift of the Maggie.”
Zane and Kelsey engage in a fake Twitter war to boost their profiles but Charles is not happy about it and urges her to stop. It’s surprising to see Kelsey sass Charles back about Empirical using money that Millennial made and continues to tweet.
It’s not too surprising though that Kelsey is in trouble by the end of the episode because Empirical biggest earner has been poached by Zane’s publisher. As soon as she was cocky with Charles, I knew that something was going to happen.
When Liza goes to comfort Kelsey, it’s refreshing to see that Kelsey is crying over the potential loss of her job and not over Zane.
I hope that Kelsey gives Zane the opportunity to explain himself though because I really do enjoy them as a couple.
Most of the comedic relief on “A Close Shave” comes from Diana who has Liza pick out several birthday present options for Charles. Going through the presents, Diana discovers that she loves Richard, not Charles, and that she should stop presenting herself the way she does.
Diana: “He’ll get a goddamn cupcake like everyone else.”
I hope that this doesn’t mean that Diana will no longer wear impeccable clothing and amazing jewelry.
In a disconnected, but funny plot, Maggie and Lauren go out for drinks. At the bar, a woman approaches Maggie and tells her she’s a fan of her art. The woman is very beautiful but she has a very noticeable mustache.

It’s hilarious to see Maggie keep her mouth shut about the ‘stache especially because she is usually so upfront. Things come to a head when the woman wants to take a bath with Maggie and asks Maggie to shave her.
Yeah, she didn’t mean her mustache, which is exactly what Maggie goes for.
Bath time is over.
The other main storyline is how Liza is outed to Jay, the publisher who tried to steal her from Millenial at Bonfire. After he sees Liza out with Caitlin, she must tell him her secret.
Unlike everyone else, he doesn’t want anything from her. They have a sweet conversation about their favorite shows growing up when in walks Charles to the very same restaurant.
Charles and Jay know each other from college and well, Jay solidifies Liza’s cover as a millennial because apparently, Jay likes the younger ladies in the publishing biz. He makes it clear that their dinner is “social” and not “business.”
I’m not going to spoil the ending of “A Close Shave,” but man, my jaw dropped. It is such a fantastic ending but I don’t envision it being resolved anytime soon.

As much as I love Josh, it’s impossible not to root for Charles.
“A Close Shave” is a big episode which packs a lot of stuff in such a short amount of time. It never feels rushed, but I’m always so disappointed when Younger comes to an end.
Will the next episode pick up straight after “A Close Shave” finishes? Will Kelsey hear out Zane? Will she still have a job at Empirical? And most importantly, will Diana just start schlepping around the office?
Final Notes:
- It was nice to see Liza and Caitlin together. Sometimes I forget that Caitlin exists.
- I will never get tired of the objectification of Zane.
- We HAVE TO hear Diana’s HarperCollins story.
- My favorite outfit of the week had to be Kelsey’s red jumpsuit.
- Seeing Lauren this week really made me miss her. When is she going to be clued in about Liza?
