The Mist Review: The Waiting Room (Season 1 Episode 5)
On The Mist Season 1 Episode 5, “The Waiting Room,” Kevin tries to save his brother by performing surgery via walkie-talkie. Plus we get a Kevin and Eve back story. Yay! Not really.
“The Waiting Room” is one of the most gruesome episodes of the series so far, but it is also one of the goofiest.
There’s so much wrong with this episode, I don’t even know where to begin.
Let’s focus on the miracle surgery. It’s beyond ridiculous that any surgeon would allow someone completely unqualified to perform major surgery on another person.
I get this is a television show, but there has to be some modicum of reality. The Mist isn’t trying to be funny; it’s dead serious. But let’s move beyond the silliness of the situation, and let’s forget about the fact that in real life, Mike would be dead already from his wound. The kicker is that Kevin actually performs the surgery…successfully!!
Eye roll, anyone? Despite being completely laughable, it is also the second grossest scene of the hour. This isn’t horror. It’s gore for gore’s sake, and that’s the worst kind of horror, at least in my book.

What is scary though, is when the leeches arrive. They’re all over the ceiling and when the gurney falls over, they’re all over Mike.
We don’t get an explanation for the leeches, but Mike seems to know. He understands why the mist is doing this to him even if Kevin doesn’t…yet.
We learn a few new things this hour which may add to the overall story later, but it’s starting to get predictable, and it’s a shame.
Maybe it’s just Kevin and Eve’s storyline that is bringing the entire show down.
It’s not good when the two most unlikeable characters on a show are the main characters, but that’s how I feel about Eve and Kevin. There are no redeeming qualities to either of them. Sure, Kevin thinks he’s Eve’s savior, but he only sees what’s in front of him, not what’s around him.

Perhaps watching his brother die and Mia’s outburst at him earlier about Bryan will snap him out of his one-world view, but it’s a long shot. We’re already five episodes in and Kevin doesn’t look like he’s about to change anytime soon.
But Kevin may have no choice. He’s not going anywhere because Mia took off with the truck and left us with a mystery to solve.
If Bryan isn’t Bryan, who is he, and why did he beat the real Bryan Hunt up and steal his uniform? And what exactly is this Arrowhead that the real Bryan Hunt talks about? Will it be the same as the movie?
While this hour of The Mist did provide some useful information, it didn’t really move the story forward at all. Hopefully, we’ll get back on track next week and see what’s happening at the church and the mall.
