The Bold Type Photo Preview: First Comes A Character Reference (Season 1 Episode 4)

The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 4, “If You Can’t Do It With Feeling,” hints at something stronger in the air than Chanel No. 5., and it smells a lot like love.

Jane finally knows what it’s like to “have a good time,” and she’s really opening up to her new experiences with Ryan. Here’s to hoping that she also finds the confidence to open up her heart.

Sutton found her confidence to go for the fashion assistant job. However, there seems to be another bump in the road in the form of another person. It can’t be Lauren because Jane won her over on The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 3, “The Woman Behind the Clothes.” So who could possibly stand in her way now?

My bets are on a new person altogether. There hasn’t been one person we’ve met since the beginning of the series that isn’t completely on board with her getting this position now. The only way it could be someone we’ve met would be if someone changed their mind.

On the other hand, Sutton’s quote might be referencing a different situation altogether.

If I’m gonna lose this job, it’s going to be me who loses this job.

In the time between episodes 3 and 4, maybe Lauren pulled strings and got Sutton the assistant’s job and Sutton’s overcompensating at work by trying to be someone she’s not. This is a new industry that she doesn’t have much experience in, so I could see her trying to imitate someone else’s fashion choices that are successful in the fashion world already.

Therefore, her job might be on the line because of who she’s trying to be instead of her showing her boss the trendsetter that she already is.

Speaking of people showing their true selves, Kat and Adena’s ship is finally sailing! Even though The Bold Type Sneak Peek still shows the two with professional pretenses behind their meeting, the promotional video shows a completely different interaction.

They look like they’re about to kiss!!

This means one of two things (or both): Kat finally opened up about her feelings for Adena and/or Adena broke up with her current girlfriend. I hope it’s both. I don’t want Kat and Adena’s relationship to start out on a dirty secret with someone else bound to get hurt.

But I am excited to see The Bold Type focus on their intersectional aspect of the show again. Kat and Adena’s identities, specifically, are the perfect focal points for a television show like The Bold Type in the context of America today. Intersectionality is where current feminism sits and it’s an aspect that a feminist show should definitely expand and explore.
