17 Best Television Shows About Space

Dark Matter, Doctor Who, Firefly, Killjoys, Lists, Pinned, The 100
7. Firefly (2002)

Firefly

This science fiction western may have only lasted a season, but its impact still remains today. The crew of a small transport spaceship called Serenity takes any job so long as it puts food on the table.

The different crew members just want to survive and maybe have better lives, but they face constant challenges on the new frontier, such as Reavers, the Alliance, and each other at times. Though fans continue to push for a follow-up, the uproar from its cancellation prompted a feature film giving some closure to the characters we grew to love.

My favorite line from series: Malcolm Reynolds — “You’re part of the crew. Why are we still talking about this?”

8. Killjoys (2015 – present)

This show is about a trio of bounty hunters that chase deadly warrants through the Quad, a planetary system, which is on the brink of a interplanetary class war. They work for the RAC (Recovery and Apprehension Coalition), an independent organization of assassins and retrieval experts who try to main impartial as they chase down these sometimes deadly warrants.

My favorite line from series: Dutch – “I have a headache, a badge and a gun… Behave.”

9. Lost in Space (1965 – 1968)

 17 Best Television Shows About Space | Tell-Tale TV - Part 2

This series is about The Robinson Family whose five-year mission and spaceship is tampered with by an agent working for an enemy government, who ends up as a stowaway, and leaves them adrift in space for years struggling to find a way back to Earth. Those on the spaceship included the Robinson family, which consisted of Professor John Robinson, his wife Maureen, their children (Judy, Penny, and Will), Major Don West, a Robot and spy Doctor Zachary Smith.

My favorite line from series: Dr. Smith – “You bubble-headed booby! You realize what you’ve done?”

10. Other Space (2015)

 17 Best Television Shows About Space | Tell-Tale TV - Part 2

This series is about a young and rookie crew are on a routine space mission and get drawn through a portal into a different universe.  They face obstacles including mysterious clouds, folds in time, and the occasional alien attack. This comedic approach did well with viewers on as a Yahoo original, however after the production side shut down — this show we fear won’t get to see the light again.

My favorite line from series: A.R.T — “When reality doesn’t have enough drama in it, you don’t give up, you intervene.”

11. Star Trek Deep Space Nine (1993 – 1999)

 17 Best Television Shows About Space | Tell-Tale TV - Part 2

This series was another Star Trek spin-off that is set on a space station where Commander Sisko is in charge of the diverse crew. Slightly different from the other Star Trek series, this one had no ship to help them. The crew continually fights off rival alien species  who want to control the space station because of its strategic position close to a wormhole, which has major advantages for space travel.

My favorite line from series: Quark (after developing a conscience) – “It’s been coming for a long time. I’ve fought against it. I really have! But living with those people, day in and day out… being exposed to their ethics… their morality… it’s like I’ve been brainwashed!”

12. Star Trek The Next Generation (1987 – 1994)

 17 Best Television Shows About Space | Tell-Tale TV - Part 2

This series is set more than 75 years after the original series, where a new crew lead by Captain Picard begin their five-year mission into space where no man has gone before.

The Federation itself has gone through some internal changes which adds a new degree of controversy to its methods of exploring space and seeking out new life, including new sinister enemies such as Romulans and the Borg. The series ended with the crew of the Enterprise portrayed as feeling more like a family and ended up paving the way for four consecutive films.

Hillary is television fanatic and spends most of her free time talking about all things television and pop culture, even if it’s just with baby padawan (her son) and her wife. Her current day job is working within the nonprofit sector, and she is pretty much in love with any show that has strong female characters. Never one to be boxed into any sort of genre, her show preferences range from Wynonna Earp and Dark Matter to One Day At a Time and Modern Family.
