Wynonna Earp Review: Shed Your Skin (Season 2 Episode 2)
Wynonna Earp seems to be finding its footing for the second season, as the team does the same with their new arrangement with Black Badge.
Wynonna Earp Season 2 Episode 2, “Shed Your Skin,” shows us the ways that the team has fractured in Doll’s absence and how Wynonna is still struggling with both the loss of Dolls and Willa.
Doc: It’s alright to miss him Wynonna.
Wynonna: I didn’t know when we rescued Dolls we wouldn’t get to keep him.
I too didn’t know we wouldn’t get to keep Dolls. Doc’s reasoning for why he can’t currently be in Purgatory, but I’m not really comfortable with him disappearing entirely and I hope it doesn’t last the entire Season.
I have a lot of faith in the Wynonna Earp writers, but after watching Supergirl sideline James Olsen during their second season I’m very wary of shows taking out men of color who are vital to the team.
Unlike Supergirl at least, Wynonna Earp definitely makes the audience know that the team is very aware of Dolls’ absence. Wynonna feels utterly lost without him, conflicted between trying to let him go and not wanting to let him down or give up on him.
Wynonna: This may be a shitshow, but it’s our shitshow.
“Shed Your Skin” shows us the balance that makes this show so enjoyable where Wynonna Earp is able to make us laugh and jump out of our seats at the same time. We even got more jokes out of Doc’s missing hat this week.
Wynonna works best when she’s able to get out of her head and take down the monsters on her own terms. With Dolls being gone and Doc being checked out of actually doing work with the team Wynonna feels like she can’t lead the team, at least not the way Dolls did.
I’m looking forward to watching her realize that she’s just as good of a leader as any of the men, she just has to do it her own way.
Wynonna: I am woman! I made fire!
We still don’t know what exactly Waverly is, in fact Waverly isn’t even sure what she is. Wynonna Earp Season 2 Episode 2 picks up on the thread at the end of Season 1, of Waverly’s fear instilled in her by Willa and Bobo that she may not be an Earp by blood.

Thankfully this plot gives us Wayhaught finally making up. Look I know it’s only been one episode, but I don’t like when they fight, okay? Nicole knows how important the truth is to Waverly so she’s decided to help her find it.
Whatever she finds, she’s always going to be an Earp in our eyes.
Wynonna: Once an Earp always an Earp.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
- Does Jeremy have a crush on Doc? He’s definitely hardcore fangirling over him, and honestly I am prepared to ship it.
- Who is Rosie and why are we supposed to care?
- What was up with those creepy old west witches with Wynonna’s mother’s perfume? And what came after the creepy demon bugs?
- Wynonna running into spiderwebs is seriously delightful. I love having a lady hero who can also be an absolute dork.
- Seriously, what is Waverly?
