Supergirl Review: City of Lost Children (Season 2 Episode 20)
Season 2 of Supergirl has been rather hit or miss, but as we head toward the Season finale, it has hit two home-runs in a row.
On Supergirl Season 2 Episode 20, “City of Lost Children,” the series tackles the importance of representation and also gives us one of Lena’s most compelling storylines, all while setting up what looks to be an incredible finale.
James has been getting the short end of the storyline stick all season, but on Season 2 Episode 20, “City of Lost Children,” he finally gets to shine again. After some disheartening rescues as the Guardian, James begins to wonder if what he does is even worth it.
He finds his purpose when he’s able to actually make a difference in the life of a frightened young black boy named Marcus.
Marcus sees himself in James, but he also sees something good and trustworthy in him. All kinds of doors are opened up to people when they see themselves reflected in their heroes and in media.
This is the kind of stories James should have been getting all season, hopefully in Season 3 he’ll get a more central role much like the one he had in Season 1.
Connecting the two plotlines of this episode, the people James is trying to save are being affected by the machine that Lena and Rhea have been working on. One of the core facets of Lena’s character is the damaging relationship she has with her mother, Lillian Luthor.
Rhea finds the desperation for a positive mother figure in Lena’s life and preys upon it in order to use her mind and her technology for her own evil will. It’s almost heartbreaking to watch Lena flourish under Rhea’s encouragement when we know she’s being manipulated.
Though the fear of her becoming a villain always looms in the background, Lena’s intentions are continually good at heart.
Lena: This was supposed to revolutionize the way everything was transported. Eliminate faman, the need for fossil fuels. I wanted to help my planet, and get you home to yours.
Hopefully, Lena’s good heart and her connection with Kara will keep her safe in the coming finale.
Lena learns the truth about Rhea when she reveals the true reason she had Lena build the portal. The remaining survivors of Daxam come flooding in at the last minute in a terrifying invasion of Earth/National City. A tragedy like this brings back series great Cat Grant, as well as Lillian Luthor and the President!

OTHER THOUGHTS:
- Lena and Kara having lunch and talking about NSYNC is honestly the cutest thing ever! Please Supergirl writers don’t take this relationship from us!
- “Clark’s friend/frenemy” ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT BATMAN?
- Rhea talking Mon El out of shooting her is the best scene he’s had all season.
- CatCo gets destroyed like, every other week. Who’s their insurance provider?
