Supergirl: 7 Things We Love About “Alex” (Season 2 Episode 19)
Supergirl has had a rocky Season 2, but Season 2 Episode 19, “Alex,” is one of the best episodes of the series to date.
Revolving around the two best relationships on the show “Alex” gives us more of what we love and brings all of our favorite ladies front and center. Here are the 7 things I loved most about Supergirl Season 2 Episode 19.
7 THINGS WE LOVED:
7. ALEX’S RESOURCEFULNESS
Alex Danvers has been a badass since we first met her. She has an affinity for huge guns and saving her sister. On Supergirl Season 2 Episode 19, Alex has to use her incredible skillset to keep herself alive long enough for Kara and Maggie to find her.

From ripping out her own tracker and connecting it to the camera watching her, to using her own pants as a flotation device, Alex contributes almost as much as Kara and Maggie to saving her own life.
Alex: I knew I just had to buy a couple seconds, I knew you were coming.
6. FLASHBACK TIE-IN
Earlier in the season we saw a flashback to little Kara saving a woman in a car accident, which lead to Kara learning to hide her identity and wear her glasses. At the time we got no explanation of whether or not the other children saw or understood anything that happened.
Rick: I saw Kara Danvers do something amazing, and it stayed with me.
Apparently, someone did put the pieces together though and eventually figured out that Kara Danvers and Supergirl are the same person. While Rick definitely uses this knowledge for evil, it’s satisfying to see this plot-hole tied up.
5. LENA AND RHEA’S BACK AND FORTH
We know Rhea is straight up evil, but Lena, despite her family’s history, has continually fallen on the right side of morality. These two have a really interesting chemistry, and until the end of Supergirl Season 2 Episode 19, it’s almost impossible to determine whether or not Lena will take Rhea’s offer.

Rhea is obviously playing Lena, and I can’t tell if it’s going to work out in her favor or not. Will Lena’s connection to Kara/Supergirl be exactly what Rhea needs to take her out? Or will Lena’s relationship with Kara be the domino that takes down Rhea’s entire scheme?
4. KARA AND MAGGIE’S CONFLICT
Though this conflict between the two of them is new, if feels organic and the tension between them is natural.
Maggie: You never look before you leap.
Kara: Yeah, because I can fly.
Kara always thinks she’s doing the right thing when she goes off to save the world and fight crime. And most of the time she is, but her actions have consequences that she doesn’t always think about. Throughout the episode Kara continually runs straight into what she thinks is the right decision, while Maggie steps back to look at all the moving pieces.
Kara has to learn that her way is not always the best way.
I also really enjoyed that Supergirl addressed the concept of property damages which so many superhero shows ignore or overlook.
3. FIRSTS
Some of the most emotional scenes in television history come from our heroes being put in life or death situations. The fear of the end often pushes people to say how they truly feel about one another. Maggie and Alex bring this age old trope to life and tears to my eyes, as Maggie stops Alex from saying goodbye.
Maggie: We have a lifetime of firsts that we’re going to do together, so you hold on. Hold on until I get to you.
This is the first time in Supergirl Season 2 Episode 19 that we really see Maggie get emotional. Most of the time she presents this calm collected facade, but inside she’s just as desperate as Kara is to find Alex.

2. KARA AND MAGGIE SAVE ALEX TOGETHER
In the end it takes both of them working together to find Alex. Maggie has to keep Kara from running off on her first instincts, and Kara has to keep Maggie from compromising herself to save Alex. Rick says that it’ll be fun for him to find out which of them loves Alex more, but the thing is, Kara and Maggie both love Alex in different ways which are equally important.

Kara is her sister and her bond with Alex is one of the strongest familial bonds I’ve ever seen, they love each other more than anything in the world. I would even say that the relationship between Kara and Alex is the true core of the show. But Maggie loves her too, she loves her as a partner, as a girlfriend, a soulmate. She got Alex to be herself and she makes her happier and stronger every single day.
Maggie: You and me made a pretty good team didn’t we?
Kara: Yeah well, we both love her.
The love that Kara has for her sister and the love that Maggie has for her girlfriend cannot be compared to each other because they aren’t the same kind of love. They’re equally important and Alex wouldn’t be who she is today without both of them.
1. ALEX AND MAGGIE SAY I LOVE YOU
Supergirl has had it’s up’s and down’s in Season 2, but the relationship between Alex and Maggie has been consistently satisfying. We’ve gotten to see this love grow between them from the moment they met. We’ve seen them struggle, and change, and make each other better, and happier. We’ve watched them fall in love with each other.
Alex: I love you, Maggie Sawyer.
Maggie: I love you, Alex Danvers.
Alex brings back Maggie’s plea to continue having firsts together for the rest of their lives. Everything about this scene is lovely and inspiring. I am so thankful for this relationship and so glad we’ve gotten to go along with them on this journey. I can’t wait to get to watch them have more firsts!
