iZombie Review: Some Like it Hot Mess (Season 3 Episode 6)
Liv on hot mess zombie brain is just plain annoying.
Don’t get me wrong! I think iZombie Season 3 Episode 6, “Some Like it Hot Mess,” is a terrific installment that answers big questions and pushes numerous characters into unknown territory.
Before we get to the lackluster case of the week, let’s discuss the reveal that Blaine has been faking his amnesia for almost the entire time. I blame David Anders and the writers for making the character so charming. Somehow they make Blaine’s actions both selfish and understandable.
Blaine faking the amnesia doesn’t come as a surprise at all. I knew in my gut something wasn’t right. However, I have to hand it to him for fully committing to the lie.
Turns out Blaine suffered a brief bout of memory loss after taking the cure, but all his memories came rushing back quickly. His confession to Peyton seems genuine, and I can’t say I wouldn’t have done what he did were I in his shoes.
I don’t think Blaine dreamed of being a bad guy when he was a kid. However, the decisions he’s made throughout his life have led him to commit heinous acts. Sorry, but I will never forgive the whole murdering kids thing.
Blaine saw an opportunity to change his life. The amnesia allowed him the chance to join the good guys, stay out of trouble, and get the girl. I completely understand why he lied. Self-preservation is a powerful motivation.

But wanting a do-over doesn’t erase the past. Blaine’s feelings for Peyton appear to be sincere, but his lies may have killed their relationship for good.
Look, I am not Peyton’s biggest fan right now. I feel for the girl because Blaine made her look like a fool, but it’s not like she didn’t get any warnings. Maybe if she had listened to Ravi, she wouldn’t be in the position she’s in now.
Ravi’s jealously caused Peyton to question his motives, but that doesn’t change the fact she chose to put her trust in a man with a villainous past. Peyton also put her feelings for Blaine ahead of her friends.
She spends the majority of the episode playing house with Blaine. I don’t see her volunteering to watch Major in case he loses his memories. Where is the deep concern?
Don E backing up Ravi’s suspicions makes Peyton scoff at first. But why? Why is someone like Blaine more trustworthy than his former associate? At least Ravi puts enough doubt into Peyton’s mind for her to suss out the truth from Blaine.
Peyton is finally able to step out of her Blaine-bubble, but it’s not enough to redeem her right now. Major and Liv could have been humans for months now if it weren’t for Blaine’s lies.
Now that Peyton has rejected Blaine, what is his next step? He has the list of ingredients needed for the blue brain juice to amp up zombie visions. Is he going to be the villain everyone claims he is? Or is Blaine going to prove himself worthy somehow?

On the bright side, Major only loses his memory temporarily. Watching him enjoy copious amounts of ice cream is so cute and gross at the same time.
Before his memory begins to fade, he writes letters to the people he cares about. For a moment I worry that we won’t see this version of Major anymore: the loyal friend, the devoted boyfriend, the hero.
Thankfully, Major gets himself to his mother’s house just as his memory comes back. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall the show ever discussing the estranged relationship he has with his mother.
Even though the entire subplot of Major reconnecting with his mother feels a bit out of left field, their reunion is just so sweet. Happy Major makes me happy.
Now that Blaine’s lies have come to light, Major knows his memories will remain intact and Liv can now become human again. But that would be too easy, right?
Yep, just when they return to the morgue to give Liv the cure, all the syringes have been stolen. Blaine seems too obvious to be the culprit. Don E could very well have stolen the cure in order to get paid handsomely for curing wealthy zombies.
But we can’t forget about Vivian and Fillmore Graves. Justin did see that there was a cure when Ravi and Liv saved Major. It’s very likely that he spilled the beans to his boss and they raided the morgue. Vivian doesn’t seem particularly interested in curing herself or her people.
Liv’s only solution at the moment is the final syringe Ravi gave to Major, but that syringe is currently in the hands of Natalie. This cure is the only thing standing in the way of Liv and Major’s happily ever after.
All the different reveals (Blaine’s lies, Major’s memories, the missing syringes, Don E’s new business venture) all lead to one very important question… If Liv takes the cure, is iZombie over?
After all, Liv’s zombie visions are crucial to her helping Clive’s investigations. If she were a human again, Liv would be of no use to him. Solving murders has given Liv purpose as a zombie. Is she ready to give that up?
A reset of the series is always possible, but what would iZombie look like with the heroine cured? Life would probably go on as it did before.

With these lingering questions, it’s hard to delve too much into the case of the week. Liv eats the brain of a hot mess and bascially turns into the type of person I try to avoid.
I do love how the writers manage to call out the so-called “nice guys” who are definitely not what they appear. They are only nice for personal gain and once they don’t get what they think they deserve or are owed, they turn into jerks.
Liv has her brief funny moments like leaving her cell phone in a dead body, but the real purpose of this particular brain is just to service the larger plots at hand. Liv needs to be scatter-brained in order for them to lose track of Major and so Blaine can get his hands on the blue brain potion.
This installment leaves us with a lot of questions. I’m not certain where the show goes from here, but I can’t wait to find out!
