Grant Gustin and Tom Felton Discuss ‘The Flash’ at Silicon Valley Comic Con
The Flash himself, Grant Gustin, joined cast-mate Tom Felton at a panel at Silicon Valley Comic Con this year to discuss the hit show.
Here’s what they had to say about filming the popular superhero series together:
1. Tom Felton was nervous his first day on set
Felton described The Flash cast and crew as “very, very tight,” and admitted that it was “a bit nerve-wracking” to be joining the team. “When they first asked me to try out for the show, I wasn’t well-versed in it, so I watched a couple episodes which quickly turned into 45 episodes. I was very nervous.”
He added, “When you’re joining it you feel like a bit of an outsider, especially because I’m English. I was the odd duckling, wasn’t I?”
Grant Gustin was excited for Felton to be a part of the cast. “I was very excited to meet Tom. When Tom’s announcement came out, I freaked out. I called everybody immediately and said, ‘We have Draco Malfoy!'”
2. Tom Cavanagh causes the most shenanigans on set
Gustin didn’t hesitate to name Cavanagh when the moderator asked who causes the most shenanigans. Felton agreed saying, “I’ve never met anyone like him.”
“He has a remarkable ability to find some sort of childlike, innocent humor in everything. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the middle of crying your eyes out in a scene,” Felton continued. “The world would be a much more boring place without Tom Cavanagh.”
Cavanagh directed Season 3 Episode 19, “The Once and Future Flash.” Despite his crazy onset antics, both Gustin and Felton have a lot of respect for Cavanagh.
Gustin: I personally have a lot of respect for Tom Cavanagh, so when he takes the reigns you show him that respect, but he doesn’t stop being Tom Cavanagh, so we’re still going to joke around all day. It was hands down the most fun I’ve ever had making an episode of The Flash. He did his homework; he more than knew what he was doing and what he wanted to accomplish with the episode. We had fun the whole time.
Felton: Make no mistake, as much as a buffoon that he can be, he is, by far, one of the most talented actors. He understands the world of television, and the nature of these shows, and the characters inside out. He manages to uncover every opportunity to do something different and something funny. Being Cavanagh he manages to find some humor in a lot of places where other people would not.
3. The two of them came up with a ship name
Felton started campaigning for a Barry/Julian ship once he and Gustin became fast friends on set. “Early on it was apparent that Grant and Tom were getting along rather well, and Barry and Julian quickly became Barulian,” Felton said proudly.
“We started a ship name,” laughed Gustin.
However, the two might have varying degrees of their shipdom:
Felton: I was very passionate. I genuinely thought it would be a lovely twist if at the end of the season Barry and Julian ran off together.
Gustin: Hold on. We thought it would be interesting to reveal some kind of underlying feelings, potentially. That Barry was going to probably reject, mind you.
Felton: Wait, what?
Gustin: We thought it would be fun to go in that direction—we have so much chemistry—but they didn’t buy it.
4. Gustin is long-time friends with Chris Wood, Mon-El on Supergirl
Gustin and Wood were both musical theater majors at Elon University. “We had never been on a film set or TV set [together], and our two superhero shows [do] a musical crossover episode, so that was really weird.”
5. Gustin is teaching Felton to dance
Gustin informed the audience, “I’ve been trying to teach him to tap all year.” He complimented Felton telling him, “You’ve been very successful. You’re quite good.”
“I’m bloody brilliant,” responded Felton before giving us a demonstration.
Felton: *does a jig*
Gustin: That’s not tap.
Felton: *does the running man*
Gustin: Also not tap.
The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
