Girls Review: What Will We Do This Time About Adam? (Season 6 Episode 8)

Girls, Reviews

Whew, that was a close one.

As good as it is to see Hannah and Adam together again on Girls Season 6 Episode 8 “What Will We Do This Time About Adam?” it would be a step backward for Hannah to get back with him.

“What Will We Do This Time About Adam?” is another terrific episode of Girls and finally closes the Adam-Hannah chapter for good. There is also a nice start of a romance for Ray and it appears that even Jessa can’t revert back to her old ways.

It’s absolutely sweltering in Brooklyn, so it’s the perfect time for Hannah and Elijah to strip down to their undies. Elijah is hilarious as always and apparently knows how Hannah can get a late abortion. Elijah seriously associates with some shady people.

Adam finds Hannah in a bodega stocking up on a bunch of popsicles and confesses that he wants to raise her baby. Oh, Adam. He really doesn’t know what he wants, does he?

The scene between Adam and Jessa when he tells her he’s leaving her to raise Hannah’s baby is hard to watch. Jessa is certainly unlikeable, but it’s difficult not to feel for her in this scene. Her emotionless reaction is very telling.

Jessa is very passionate about most things, so for her to act completely calm, is a tell-tale sign that she is not taking the news well at all.

And then she vomits while talking to a cable company on the phone.

So, is Jessa pregnant? When she visits Laird, Jessa says that Adam is busy taking care of Hannah’s baby. The way she says “her” baby makes it sound like she’s mad that Adam is taking care of someone else’s kid and not his own.

Or, maybe she just vomited because of the heat or feeling like crap because the guy she loves left her for her pregnant ex-friend.

Jessa goes to a bar and tries to hook up with some random in the bathroom, but it doesn’t give her the satisfaction it used to. It’s another hard scene to watch because nothing about this scene is sexy or carefree.

It’s just sad and ugly.

In stark contrast, Hannah and Adam spend the whole day together and it’s great. They have easy chemistry together and the episode is reminiscent of early seasons of Girls. But as we’re watching, we all know it’s not going to last.

The diner scene is amazing. The look on Hannah’s face– wow. Those tears!

It seemed at the end of Season 5, that Hannah and Adam were definitely done, but with the movie and finding out that Hannah is pregnant, it seemed natural for Girls to explore Adam and Hannah’s relationship once more.

They spend the day making love, walking around Brooklyn drinking soda, and talking about Hannah’s motherhood fears. It makes that diner scene all the more realistic and heart-breaking when their end comes quietly and without the anger and passion we have seen them exhibit in earlier seasons.

It feels like we got closure with Adam and Hannah as well.

“What Will We Do This Time About Adam?” also marks the return of Ray and Shosh, although Shosh simply does not have enough to do.

While fighting about air quotes, Ray and Shosh are joined by Shosh’s old boss, Abigail. Ray and Abigail hit it off and cast Shosh to the side. Ray and Abigail’s day ends with a kiss on a carousel.

The Abigal-Ray storyline is a surprise, but it’s a good one. Ray deserves happiness and after the whole Marnie debacle, he deserves someone who is going to be kind to him.

But he acts like a jerk towards Shosh. Not cool, Ray.

Overall, “What Will We Do This Time About Adam?” is another fantastic episode of Girls. As usual, it has some funny moments, but also an emotional pull that Girls hasn’t had in previous seasons.

We only have two more episodes to go and from the previews, it looks like the next episode is going to have all the Girls in one room together. Can’t wait!

Last Thoughts:

  • Poor Laird. Can he please get a happy ending?
  • Hannah should take up some of these offers of people wanting to help raise her baby. At this rate, she won’t need to lift a finger.
  • Sample is the cutest baby!
  • Some of Hannah’s nightmare scenarios about the baby are completely terrifying.
  • “I’m not getting an abortion, Elijah, I’m having feelings. It’s different!
