Girls Review: Goodbye Tour (Season 6 Episode 9)

Girls, Reviews

Girls Season 6 Episode 9 “Goodbye Tour” certainly feels more like a series finale rather than a penultimate episode. There are plenty of tears and laughter; dancing and singing. There is also a “group meeting” between the four girls.

Although “Goodbye Tour” is a fairly quiet episode, there are big changes for Hannah. The episode starts with her attending an interview at a college within a bus drive away from New York. It’s not realistic in the slightest, but it’s a good way to make Hannah grow up even more.

Does she take the job upstate or does she struggle in Brooklyn?

There is another great scene between Hannah and Elijah, who she turns to for advice about her big decision.

Hannah: New York hasn’t brought me anything but misery.

Elijah sings Demi Lovato to Hannah as they both go to bed in one of the sweetest and saddest scenes on the episode. Elijah and Hannah have definitely had some of the best scenes of the whole series this season.

The rest of the episode is of Hannah trying to get in touch with Marnie and Shoshanna. As she wanders around New York, she sees two girls in a magic shop, all excited about moving to the city together.

It’s a nice moment for Hannah to reflect on and it also prompts her to call Shosh.

Shosh’s phone number is disconnected, so Hannah ends up at her apartment instead where Shosh is throwing an engagement party.

Yep, Shosh is engaged to a seemingly nice guy named Byron, but Hannah had no idea and neither did we.

Shosh has barely been around and although we really feel Hannah’s shock at the news, it still would have been nice to see more of Shosh this season. Shosh looks gorgeous and happy, which is what we want for Shosh.

At the party, Marnie demands that the girls have a group meeting in the bathroom. It’s there where Shosh harshly tells them that they can’t hang out without one of them making the whole situation about themselves.

She wants to be friends with people who have “good jobs and purses” and clearly, Marnie, Hannah, and Jessa are not those people.

Good for Shosh for standing up for herself and distancing herself from toxic people. At least she doesn’t kick them all out.

Marnie’s group meeting did some good– Hannah and Jessa have a raw, emotional moment together afterward.  In a very unlike Jessa move, she apologizes to Hannah. They both cry and Jessa gives a baby present to Hannah.

The Jessa and Hannah apology is the most emotional part of the episode. Jessa and Hannah probably aren’t going to be in each other’s lives, but it is something that had to be done. We have seen Hannah’s growth this season and so, it’s good to see that Jessa has grown up a little too.

Hannah: We were all just doing our best.

Jessa: Our best was awful.

The scene between Hannah and Jessa is so different from the one earlier this season where Jessa is upset that Hannah didn’t tell her about the baby and calls Hannah her “dear friend.” This time, Jessa is genuinely sorry and doesn’t make it about herself.

The episode finishes with a montage of Hannah, Marnie, Shosh, and Jessa all dancing (not together) and cuts into Hannah’s new life as she moves into her beautiful new home upstate.

Overall, “Goodbye Tour” feels very much like that. It’s an emotional, reflective episode that still manages to make us laugh.

So, where do we go from here? For the final episode, will there be another time jump? Will the episode just be about Hannah?

Last Thoughts:

  • Caroline returns briefly to take care of baby Sample. She’s on the right amount of pills at the moment, so maybe Laird gets his happy ending after all?
  • Hannah’s rant about seeing a man defecate on the street is hilarious as is Marnie and Jessa’s conversation about it afterward.
  • Elijah got the part in White Men Can’t Jump the Musical!
  • Of course, Shosh met Byron at a Sprinkles Cupcake ATM.
  • Where was Ray? Sure, Shosh might not want her ex at her engagement party, but it’s still a bit weird he isn’t there.
