The Magicians Review: Lesser Evils (Season 2 Episode 9)

Reviews, The Magicians

The Magicians Season 2 Episode 9, “Lesser Evils,” introduces future conflict between Margo and Eliot, Quentin coming to his senses, and Julia showing her true colors.

It’s not a shock that Julia is not the same without her shade. Everyone but Kady can see that she is no longer the old Julia. That person is long gone.

I didn’t want it to take Julia tossing Quentin to his death – a.k.a. Reynard – for Kady to finally realize that there’s nothing left inside of Julia to save, but at least it worked.

Now, Kady and the rest of the crew can figure out a way to keep Julia in check because, honestly, she needs it. She needs to either be put in check, or she needs to be banished from Brakebills so she can no longer use their resources.

This is going to be tough on Kady, because Julia was the one person who has been by her side lately. She doesn’t have anyone else that’s there for her no matter what. Well, that was then, and now she has Penny.

I want Kady to find a haven in Penny. I want her to become as attached to Penny as she was to Julia. Penny can be a little, okay a lot, scary but Kady is the one person he cares about and would risk his life for.

Oh, boy, has Margo screwed up, and this time I’m not sure that Eliot is going to forgive her. Instead of telling Fen that she needs to do whatever she tells her to keep Eliot alive she should’ve been upfront.

“Yeah, so they want to take your baby once it’s born to keep Eliot alive.” How hard is that to say? Now Fen and Eliot are going to be forced to give their child over to the fairies. Margo better prepare herself because her future does not look good.

Eliot may not enjoy his marriage to Fen, but having his baby ripped away from him is something that I feel like he is going to care about. There’s a line, and Margo has officially crossed it.

The baby drama will be even more intense now that Eliot has decided to marry King Idri. I can see Fen feeling abandoned by the fact that Eliot has chosen someone else to marry alongside her. It would be bad enough for it to be another woman, but to be a man? This will be interesting.

As for Quentin and Alice, all I have to say is this: FINALLY!

Quentin has been killing himself by keeping Alice locked inside of him all this time. He knows that she’s too powerful and she will ultimately end up doing whatever she wants to do so why delay it?

Releasing Alice will most definitely mess with him until he can fully get over her, but it had to be done.

“Lesser Evils” picks up the pace and intensity, and is ten times better than last week’s episode, “Word as Bond.”

Other Thoughts:

  1. Now that Reynard has his son will he kill him or will he convince him to join him?
  2. Is this the last we’ve seen of Alice? I feel like she will be back for Quentin sooner or later.
  3. The music number is one of my favorite parts about this episode. I thought it would end up being cheesy and dumb, but I was wrong.
  4. I want to see Penny and Kady sit down and talk things out. I want to visibly see them make up.

  • I believe the screenwriters wanted to prove how stupid they could be with this episode. When the magic stopped during the sword fight the other king was already disarmed with a sword at his throat but I guess without magic Eliot’s brain stopped working as well so he ran away when he had already won. Then Quentin could have killed Reynard (an evil god that attacked and raped his best friend) but he did not want to let Alice go. But the very next scene he let Alice go anyway. I am not sure the writers could get any more stupid.
