Jane The Virgin Review: Chapter Fifty-Four (Season 3 Episode 10)

Jane the Virgin, Reviews

I cannot get over this, you guys!

Break my heart why dontcha, Jane The Virgin? This can’t be.

Why?! Why?! Why?!

Jane The Virgin Season 3 Episode 10 comes at us with a twist we did not see coming, and a twist that will take more than just an episode (or two, or three,) to get over.

Jane and Michael are a perfect, happy, and healthy couple. Everything is going pretty well.

But alas, towards the last few minutes of “Chapter Fifty-Four,” Michael Cordero’s fate is revealed.

Jane The Virgin Review: Chapter Fifty-Four (Season 3 Episode 10) | Tell-Tale TV

Michael dies from a complication from his previous gunshot wounds that occurred in the Season 2 finale. Remember when we thought we were going to lose Michael then?

It’s like the same pain came back, but this time, it’s even worse, much more concrete, and not a scare.

Killing off Michael is a rather sudden move for the writers. I, for one, did not see that coming, especially over the course of these past few episodes.

However, from the start of the episode right until the sad ending, there is a lot of foreshadowing going on that leaves you very suspicious, if not very dubious, of the mere thought of something going wary.

The glimpse of Michael’s childhood, and the flashbacks of Jane and Michael’s past times together, hinted something bad was going to happen, especially in the way the narrator went about his narrating.

I mean, don’t most shows do that too? That was definitely a warning sign when you think about it.

The evolution of Jane and Michael’s profound love and relationship showed the utmost growth. From their scenes at the carnival in the past, to their scenes at the carnival in the present, it was touching and real to watch.

The way that the writers carve all of this out in one episode is exceptional work, but exceptionally heartbreaking as well.

I guess this is just another way to close one chapter of Jane’s life and open up a new one. Just like how she was artificially inseminated at the start of the series, leading up to events she never would even begin to imagine happening to her.

But this — this one hurt.

I simply cannot see Jane fully moving on from this. Though after that heart-rending, devastating cry of grief portrayed by none other than the talented Gina Rodriguez, a time jump occurs to three-years later.

Now the show will be taking us back and forth to the time surrounding after Michael’s death to the three-years later time jump. I’m curious as to how that will pan out, but I’m hopeful that the writers will do the storytelling justice.

I mean, they have to.

Meanwhile, aside from that shattering revelation, other stuff happens on this episode of Jane The Virgin.

Rafael is adamant about going to prison for the wrongdoings of his family, and I worry for his character episode after episode this season.

This season is not looking well for him, like I mentioned before in my last review. However, I’m seeing a lot of character growth with Rafael. He has changed, he’s more aware of things, and is taking more responsibility with everything that’s happened to him thus far.

Another character growth that is notable in this episode is Petra’s. Well, kind of.

Finally, her twins are back! I’ve been wondering where they were hiding them.

Petra has been having a hard time bonding with her daughters, but this time there is some improvement. She’ll get the hang of it, it isn’t an easy task for all mothers. But I’m glad to see it’s getting better.

She deserves at least this much, ‘ya know?

Stray thoughts:

  • Rogelio is obsessed with his penis! Only he would overreact uncontrollably about his nude scene being cut off in the film. Classic Rogelio.
  • Darci’s “Well, I didn’t get a glimpse of your penis tonight, but I did see a big dick!” line was the funniest burn I’ve heard in a while.
  • I wonder what will have happened in this three-year time jump. Did Xiomara move in with Bruce? Has Rafael done his time in prison like he intended to? HOW WILL THE SHOW MOVE ON WITHOUT BRET DIER?!
  • I gotta give another recognition to Gina Rodriguez’s performance in that last scene when she finds out about Michael’s death. It truly hurt to watch her crumble down as Rafael rushed to her side.
