Growing Up McGhee Recap: It’s Thanksgiving, Not Thanks-taking (Season 2 Episode 6)
On Growing Up McGhee Season 2 Episode 6, “It’s Thanksgiving, not Thanks-taking,” the family celebrates Thanksgiving, Mia and Ro celebrate their anniversary, and Madison learns a lesson the hard way.
It’s that time in November: turkey time. To figure out what everyone wants to eat for Thanksgiving, the family has a meeting in the living room. The kids start yelling out the obvious — mashed potatoes, ham, turkey, and pumpkin pie. All the ingredients to make an excellent dinner.
While at the store, Mia and Ro split up to divide and conquer to save time. But, what Mia doesn’t know is that Ro is also picking up a birthday cake, ice cream, and some roses to celebrate her birthday.
Everything is going according to plan until Madison decides to do her own thing.
As Mia and Ro are checking out, they notice a container of breath mints fall out of Madison’s coat. So, they question her only to find that she had taken multiple packs of gum and candy and hid them in her pockets.
Stealing is something that Madison has never done before, so to scare her into not doing it again they turn her into the store manager and make her apologize. Hoping that the lesson on stealing has set in, they leave the store and head home.
November is a big month for the McGhee household because they have Thanksgiving, Mia’s birthday, and their anniversary all in the same month. Ro proposed the day after Mia’s birthday seventeen years ago to make sure that their anniversary was always a fun time.

The next day as the kids are getting off the bus, Mia has to speak with the bus driver. It turns out that Madison stole the matches that were used the night before to light Mia’s birthday candles and taken them to school with her.
To prove to Madison that stealing is a very dangerous thing, Mia and Ro convince her that they are going to take her to the police station by having her pack a bag and wait by the door for the police.
The other kids take Madison going to jail harder than Madison does. They all begin to cry and say their goodbyes, defending her at the same time.
The way that the rest of the kids defend Madison to their parents is the cutest thing. No matter who comes in between them they will always be there for each other.
This trait alone is one of the reasons that I watch this show. Family above all.
Mia finally talks some sense into Madison. The whole jail scenario was only a scare tactic, which didn’t work at first but eventually got Madison to see where she was in the wrong.
Later on that night Cilky, the kids’ grandmother, comes over to watch the children so Mia and Ro can go out and celebrate their anniversary. To stay in the Thanksgiving spirit, Cilky and the kids make hand turkeys. Because she couldn’t find the tape to hang up the kids’ beautiful work, she uses a glue stick and just sticks them to the wall.
It’s Thanksgiving day, and Ro is running behind on getting the turkey prepped and put in the oven. So, to get caught up before the rest of the guests arrive Cilky and Ro’s godmother come over to help prep.
As Ro is going to check on the turkey and make sure everything is still going well he realizes that it’s nowhere near being ready. Because the turkey was not cooking fast enough, Ro has to run back to the store to get a pre-cooked turkey.
The turkey may not have cooked in time like they had wanted, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter when you’re in a house full of family and friends having fun.
