Empire Review: Cupid Kills (Season 3 Episode 4)

Empire, Reviews

I know I asked for more Cookie, but what we get on Empire Season 3 Episode 4, “Cupid Kills,” is not what I meant.

I’m totally into Cookie having a new love interest (especially if it’s going to be Taye Diggs) but I’d like it to be her storyline. Instead of using a love interest as a way to let viewers learn more about Cookie as a person independent from Lucious, Empire is reestablishing Lucious’ hold on Cookie through her budding relationship with Angelo.

I mean he named her Cookie?? I just can’t. It’s clear that Cookie hasn’t been able to be herself in a long time.

I think I speak for everyone when I say we’re ready.

With childhood flashbacks to some other lawyer/politician Cookie was dating, Tiana’s new song, and the, um, ghost threesome? between Dre, Nessa, and Rhonda I’m totally overwhelmed by love triangle imagery.

The adorable children Angelo sends to sing to Cookie are even playing a triangle.

Lucious needs to back down and let Cookie have something that is just about her. Maybe they ultimately don’t work, but the relationship between Cookie and Angelo could be a great way for Cookie to be established as an important character outside of her relation to Lucious.

Furthermore, Cookie is never going to be able to have a real relationship with Lucious until he acknowledges that she is a person outside of him.

Lucious also needs to get his nose out of Jamal’s life. I was so excited to see Jamal face his anxiety and help Frieda get out of jail.

I almost broke my TV seeing Lucious admit to helping Frieda scam Jamal. I’m hoping that turns out to not be true somehow.

He’s finally starting to sing again. Don’t take that away from us, Lucious.

I am also pretty nervous about what is about to happen. Shine clearly isn’t going to take Lucious forcing him to sign Nessa’s contract lightly. Watching him literally arm his friends for war with the Lyons gives me chills.

This is not going to be good.

If Jamal gets shot again I will legitimately lose it.

Other thoughts:

  • Poor Becky. Can Cookie please give her a promotion already? This new guy is obviously terrible.
  • I could watch a full hour of Cookie picking out outfits for a date with Angelo.
  • Why is Hakeem still not spending time with his child?
  • And where is Anika? It is never good when she disappears.
  • I can’t decide if Cookie’s line about summering in Connecticut or her Make-a-Wish foundation threat was better. I just love her so much.
  • Not telling someone that the event you are taking them to is black tie is possibly the worst thing one human can do to another human.
  • Were people sewing in their underwear at Shine’s office? Is that a thing? Did I miss something?
  • I kinda love Andre standing up for himself.
  • But the ghost threesome made me really, really uncomfortable. No, thank you.
