Killjoys Review: How To Kill Friends and Influence People (Season 2 Episode 10)

Killjoys, Reviews

“How to Kill Friends and Influence People” is the Season 2 finale of Killjoys. The mission is simple — destroy the pure source of the plasma.

This definitely isn’t what I expected the finale to focus on. Honestly, I didn’t have any solid theories on what to expect, but I figured it would be more of a direct attack on the Nine or the Company, basically a retaliation for Pawter’s death.

I’m glad it didn’t go that route, because where’s the fun in doing what’s expected? Killjoys plays the smart game and goes after why the wall is up in the first place — the plasma.

I love how this mission involves Fancy and Khlyen working with our favorite killjoys. It’s ridiculously fun watching them interact. D’av and Fancy are hilarious as partners.

Plus, Khlyen and Dutch have great chemistry together. Personally, I’ve never really decided how I feel about Khlyen. He’s an extremely complicated character, which is a great thing.

Johnny: Speaking as a member of the Shitty Dad’s club, you don’t have to forgive someone to miss them, and you don’t need anyone’s permission to love someone that you hate.

It’s fun never knowing if you can trust him — if he is really looking out for Dutch, or if he’s just in it for himself.

Khlyen provides some plasma and Aneela answers, but I’m still really confused about everything. For instance, who exactly are Khlyen’s people?

They apparently forced the ancestors of the Nine to either assimilate or prepare for all out annihilation. All we know for sure about Khlyen’s people are that they want the Quad for its plasma, so destroying the plasma means that there’s no threat of annihilation or assimilation.

I’m not sure if Khlyen’s people are wherever human Khlyen came from or the Hullen, the neuroparasite in the green goo.

I’m leaning towards his people being Hullen. They would want to allow their fellow neuroparasite brethren to prosper, which means they would need more humans who could survive the transition into becoming 6s, and that’s what the Nine was up to with the wall.

Khlyen does say he’s Hullen and “no longer entirely human,” so this also backs up my theory of Hullen being Khlyen’s people. What do you think?

I’m happy that Khlyen provides a lot of answers, but they all come so quickly and with little explanation. Sure, Khlyen says he developed a toxin, but how exactly was the toxin created, and can Dutch and company make more of it without Khlyen?

Khlyen not knowing why Dutch looks like Aneela is surprising, but I do like that the guy who knows everything still has mysteries he can’t solve.

You also believe him when he says Dutch is his penance. It’s the only explanation he could come up with as to why she looks like his daughter.

If he knew why Dutch looked like Aneela, if he could have figured out the explanation, then Khlyen wouldn’t have viewed Dutch as a way to make things right. Khlyen would have written Dutch off as something else, and it would have drastically changed their relationship.

One thing I never expected Khlyen to do was sacrifice himself for the greater good. He never seemed like the type.

This makes Khlyen’s sacrifice even more powerful and shocking. His final scenes with Dutch are absolutely fantastic. Will you miss Khlyen?

Khlyen: When the nights were long and the days were deep, there lived a girl with her father.

What did you think of this episode of Killjoys? Is Johnny making the right decision by taking a break and running away with Clara? Will next season feature Aneela vs. Dutch? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
