Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Reviews

“A team that trusts is a team that triumphs.”

One of the strengths of a show like Agents of SHIELD  is that with so many team members, it can also mean multiple stories throughout the episode.

“Meet the New Boss” showcases that with many stories in place and a ton of action-packed, yet emotional scenes that make for another good episode of Agents of SHIELD.

We get to meet the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., or as he likes his friends to call him “Jeffrey.” For most of the episode, he seems to be the boss that tries way too hard to be your friend as he was trying to with Coulson and May throughout “Meet the New Boss.”

However, the real Jeffrey might have come out as we see in the final moments of “Meet the New Boss,” when May goes out of control from being possessed by the ghost in the box from “Ghost.” After a noble but useless attempt by Coulson to calm Melinda down, the only person able to stop May is The Director himself, revealing himself to be an Inhuman.

Now as we go further into the season for  Agents of SHIELD , will we see more of The Director who wants people to call him Jeffrey and take cheesy photo ops, or The Director who knocks out May and then keeps Coulson from checking on her? My guess is that it might be the latter.

One theme of “Meet the New Boss” is how trust can unite people, but also how lack of trust can also break them apart.

Daisy goes through both sides of this theme in her confrontation with Robbie and then later when she saves Mack and Fitz from the ghost at the Pasadena plant that has a tie-in to the mysterious box that affects May.

Daisy visits Robbie at his job, and a game of cat and mouse between the two goes into full effect. It’s very interesting to see that even though Daisy has harden, teasing Robbie in front of his friends shows that she has not completely lost the person from the Pilot.

Agents of SHIELD has always been a show about themes. Another theme that is touched upon in these Daisy/Robbie scenes is that both are dealing with their own personal demons. Daisy’s demon is not the power in her but the pain she has caused herself.

Daisy is pushing everyone away because of her fear of being hurt if something was to happen to them. Mack is trying to convince Daisy to come back, and her pushing him away keeps breaking my heart just as much as Mack’s. Henry Simmons lets us feel Mack’s pain in not only his words to Daisy but the expression of sadness and anger at his feeling of being betrayed by someone he loves like family.

Mack also finds out that Yo-Yo has been helping Daisy, which is another betrayal. I don’t want to be in the same room when Mack confronts Yo-Yo with this information.

Daisy figures that it is safest not to let anyone close to her again, but as Robbie offers her a chance to join him in trying to find out what is going on, her heart overpowers her mind. I’m not certain if this will be a good thing or not, but seeing Daisy take the first step toward trusting someone again was a good sign.

After all, a person who trust can also be a person who triumphs at the end.

Quick Hits:

  • Robbie Reyes is an Oakland Raiders fan. Doesn’t he suffer enough?
  • “One Jemma Gasping.” “GASP.” FitzSimmons knowing each other so well is always a highlight.
  • Quake riding on the hood of Ghost Rider’s car is an insane stunt. Tons of respect to Chloe Bennet for doing that stunt.
  • “When it comes to May and Daisy, you can’t be objective.” I’m taking The Director’s side on this topic.
  • The Director and Coulson both speak about Peggy Carter on the congressmen’s tour, and my heart hurts at knowing there will be no more Agent Carter for us.
  • S.H.I.E.L.D going public again feels like a really bad idea, and I can’t wait to see what the public’s reaction will be.
  • Henry Simmons is such an unsung hero on this show. Seeing Mack going through the pain of not being able to help Daisy makes me want to give him a big hug.
  • Fitz and Mack as a team works. Hearing Mack calling Fitz “Turbo” sparks such fond memories of their friendship in Season 2.
