UnREAL Review: War (Season 2 Episode 1)
Trust UnREAL to return to our screens just as Quinn and Rachel are tattooing, “Money, Dick, Power,” on their wrists. The Season 2 premiere, titled “War,” continues to paint a portrait of two unapologetic, brash, and determined women set out on making history.
Despite Chet’s interference this is their baby and they plan on going down swinging if they have too. They don’t care what rules or barriers they have to bulldoze through. They will be as loud, commanding, and as crude as they please because they have invested their lives in this Everlasting.
Losing it all to Chet, without a fight, means admitting defeat and that they are the lonely, sex crazed, spinsters that others think of them to be. Because of this they don’t waste a moment mourning what could have been. Our leading ladies focus on what will be and the priorities they hold close as showrunners.
They have no qualms against making more versions of themselves.
Rachel has let power get to her head as a way to get over Adam and grasp at any shred of control she can. And while Quinn watches, Rachel’s started shaping naive, pigtailed Madison into an image of her own who gets a thrill out of making contestants cry.
Quinn is gently guiding Rachel to her full potential while making sure she doesn’t fall into her pupils spiral. She understands that there is something fundamentally different in what drives Rachel and she must be cautious while continuing to nourish her partner in crime.

The most surprising aspect of the premiere is the amount of shock that the crew exhibits at Rachel’s insistence that they push harder for extremes that will bring in ratings. They are as much a part of this as Rachel and Quinn and know what they’ve signed up for.
Trying to change Everlasting or what it’s about, in the middle of production, is no way to address the issues of tearing women down and pitting them against each other. Even quitting wouldn’t erase the guilt, shame, and disgust they must feel at working for a show where a woman killed herself last season.
So suck it up, cast and crew. You’ve got a show to make.
