Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: ‘Brexit’ Fallout and a Warning to Americans of ‘No Do-Overs’

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, News

The aftermath of the Brexit poll that saw the United Kingdom leave the EU seems to be stretching to a breaking point.

If you will recall last week’s episode of John Oliver’s late-night show Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, he beseeched voters in the UK to vote to remain in the EU.

You will also recall him taking down Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson in his usual “funny comedian manner.” He also told us that “it would be absolutely crazy for Britain to leave the EU.”

Now that the dust has settled on Brexit, we can finally find out what he thinks of the whole affair. Turns out, he thinks the exit vote is just stupid.

He begins the segment like this:

Let us begin straightaway with the United Kingdom, a place whose very name after this week’s events is beginning to sound a bit sarcastic. Because the UK, this week, voted to leave the European Union, a decision that has shaken the world. And not in a, ‘Muhammad Ali beating Sonny Liston’ kind of way. More in a, ‘Those IKEA meatballs you love contain horse kind of way.’ The fallout in Britain has been swift and significant.

And it’s true. After the results came in, the value of the British pound went down like crazy. In fact, the financial market of the entire world was shaken to its very core. So, John Oliver’s analysis about how the fallout is significant is totally on point here.

However, even John Oliver agrees that one good thing did come of the Brexit vote: David Cameron stepping down as Prime Minister.

But he can’t even enjoy that. He jokes about how, “it’s like catching an ice cream cone out of the air because a child was hit by a car. I’ll eat it, but it’s tainted somehow.

Of course, Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson, the perpetrators of the Brexit vote are caught in John Oliver’s cross-hairs again. Apparently, they are calling the date of the Referendum “Britain’s Independence Day.”

Here’s what Oliver has to say to that:

Okay, a couple of things there: First, Britain was already independent. In fact, it’s what many other countries celebrate their independence from. And second, the sequel to the movie they’re quoting actually opened this week and featured the wholesale destruction of London, which is beginning to feel pretty fucking appropriate right now.

The movie in question is Independance Day: Resurgence and indeed it features the destruction of London.

He then calls Boris Johnson “a shaved orangutan with Owen Wilson’s hair.” That’s brutal, and he’s not even finished yet. Because who’s arrived on the scene? That’s right, Donald Trump (Drumpf)!

This is what Oliver had to say about Trump’s tweet:

He found a way to make this whole thing about himself. You might think, ‘Well that is not going to happen to us in America. We’re not going to listen to some ridiculously haired buffoon, peddling lies and nativism in the hopes of riding a protest vote into power.’ We’ll let Britain tell you, it can happen, and when it does, there are no f*cking do-overs.

So, there you have it. John Oliver thinks that Brexit is a stupid idea, and judging from the aftermath, maybe it was.

He also wants to tell you that when you cast your vote this year, then there will be no turning back. There will be no do-overs, and what is happening in Britain may very well happen to us.

Oliver also tackled doping and The Olympics this week:
