Reign Review: Safe Passage (Season 3 Episode 15)
On Reign Season 3 Episode 15, “Safe Passage,” the true Heart Killer is revealed, while Catherine is framed by the Red Knights for the murders of the generals that were poisoned at her feast, and Mary finally returns to Scotland.
Narcisse: I love my wife.
Mary: No. You love power.
The Red Knights threaten to destroy the French monarchy, placing the heads of the generals on pikes, much like King Henry did to their predecessors. Only, this time, they struck at the worst possible moment: as the rest of France’s military is on their way to the castle.
Before Catherine has a chance to cover up this travesty, the military sees all and demands Catherine surrender herself for trial. They return to French court, waiting for Catherine.
Either Season 3 is the closing off of Reign‘s France story, or this is just a very messy situation the Valois family has gotten themselves into. Catherine is out of her league with the Red Knights, but now even her family has turned against her.
Bash murdering Christophe after uncovering his true identity leads to him confronting Catherine about her treasonous acts, and even the murder of his mother, which occurred in Season 2.
Bash attempted to kill Catherine for her acts and left to join Mary on her journey to Scotland, but not without a parting gift. He left a letter for his half-siblings explaining the acts Catherine took to gaining the Regency back, including having her own daughter beaten.
With everyone against Catherine, once again, will she be able to survive this time? The Red Knights want her head, and her death may end their vendetta against the Valois, and now her children may be willing to sacrifice her to survive.
Mary ended the military crusade with Francis’ help, but for how long? How long can they prolong the inevitable defeat that they are facing? They have no gold, no soldiers, only those who love France, but given the next opportunity will turn their backs on their monarchs?
Mary: Finally, after all these years, I’m going home.
A letter from Lola reveals that Mary has a short window of time for safe passage to Scotland, but as the letter arrives, she realizes she must leave within 48 hours if they’re to cross the English Channel.
But with tensions so high in France, Mary almost calls off her journey for now, to protect the only family she’s ever known. Catherine won’t let her make that sacrifice.
Mary and Catherine have grown so much this season, their relationship keeping Francis alive for one another. Letting go means letting go of Francis and finally fully grieving for him, which the power struggle has left them unable to do.
If Catherine is exiled from France, will she join Mary in Scotland as an advisor? Catherine has become Mary’s support, and without her, Mary is alone and she may be unable to face the perils that lie ahead. Plus, their scenes together have been one of the highlights of the season, never seeing them join together again would be treasonous on its own.
Bash joins Mary on her trip now, which only leaves one end for the character, since actor Torrance Coombs is leaving the show. Death.
He’ll probably sacrifice himself and pronounce his undying love for Mary as he meets his maker and all the ghosts of Mary’s ex-boyfriends.
Without Bash, who can Mary trust? She’s lost all of her ladies, her family is almost all dead, her country has all but turned against her, and she’s being hunted by Queen Elizabeth and the Protestants. Mary is headed to Scotland to be alone.
Gideon is trying to free Lola from Elizabeth, but now that Lola has grown so close to the Queen of England, will she be willing to go? Mary is her friend and her rightful Queen, as she’s from Scotland, but will Lola side herself with the more powerful side, or stay to keep her family safe?
What did you think of this episode of Reign? Will Catherine survive the end of Season 3, or join Bash in his fate? Can French court remain part of the show for Season 4, now that Mary has left for Scotland?
