Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Review: Kimmy Goes on a Playdate (Season 2 Episode 2)

Reviews, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

“Kimmy Goes On A Playdate” establishes notable players and reminds us that everyone is a little crazy at times.

Jacqueline takes on her society nemesis on this episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and it’s ridiculous.

Jane Krakowski had the difficult task of dealing with a storyline that many found offensive last season. This season, and especially in this episode, she gets to shine as the vapid, society divorcee while being wicked funny.

Not many actresses would be able to do this with the grace that Krakowski does — and with her trusting nature that the writers have the character’s best interests in mind.

The trust Jane has shown in Tina and company works to her advantage and allows her comedic timing to shine in this episode.

I couldn’t imagine Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt without an overblown caricature of a high society woman. I couldn’t imagine it without Jane playing this role, and oddly, I couldn’t imagine anyone else but Anna Camp playing Deirdre Robespierre.

They are just that good in these roles. It’s scary.

But the scariness has a cause because Jacqueline wants to be Robin Hood.  She wants to be taken seriously and help her Native American family. The only way in her mind to do this is to steal from those who are richer than her.

Actually, Bernie Sanders would probably be proud of her. Until he finds out that she’s not really doing it for her family, but to show her society peers that she can still play ball.

But Jacqueline has a heart; she wants to be good. It’s just that the way she goes about being good isn’t in a sane way. She wants to “bunker” punch her peers.

In the same sense, Kimmy wants to “bunker” punch Xan into not missing her former home.

Speaking of Kimmy and Xan, their childish antagonism toward each other is a highlight, mainly because Xan views Kimmy the same way Kimmy sees the Reverend. Which of course causes Kimmy to have a crisis of faith, but because Kimmy is such an optimistic person she quickly rebounds and ends up helping, not only herself, but Jacqueline even if the result is a very expensive painting.

We all act ridiculously at times to get ourselves out of ruts, we all act like people we aren’t, and we all want to find someone who will embrace our unique styles sense.

And who doesn’t love a cast of characters that does just that?

Other Thoughts:

  • The almost kiss between Kimmy and Jacqueline had me screaming. I wouldn’t be mad if Jaqueline turned out bisexual.
  • Speaking of Jaqueline “Now get these kids underground, and don’t let the police see you!” had me rolling on the ground.
  • Titus giving away his clothes like Little Orphan Annie. I CAN’T.
  • Titus and Lillian are probably my favorite duo on any show right now.
