The Vampire Diaries and The Originals Give Us The Crossover Event We’ve Been Waiting For

Reviews, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries and The Originals finally stop ignoring each others’ existence in the crossover event we’ve been waiting for.

“Moonlight on the Bayou” and “A Streetcar Named Desire” bring us a two-hour event has all the vampires we hate that we love, the witches that are BAMF’s every second they’re on screen, and all the WTF moments that keep us coming back for more. This crossover event covers some pretty major changes like Stefan starting off his three year run from Rayna, Caroline choosing motherhood, Damon leaving, and Klaus finally separating from his sire line against his will.

Running From Rayna

Stefan running from Rayna is being used as a means to an end without explaining what she’s really after. Rayna’s quest into New Orleans is a tool to destroy the Strix (solving Klaus’ problem) and convince Stefan that he’s not just running for a day or a week, this is forever. Afterwards, her use is to chase Stefan away from all he loves and separate him from his home.

But what else is there? What’s her endgame? She has to serve a higher purpose than just imprisoning souls. That’s boring. With that secret organization after and any supernatural oddities out there maybe a team up will happy. A united Rayna with the Salvatores seems more likely even though in the future Matt was working for her. There’s no way this group of people collecting artifacts isn’t up to something devastating for all. Before Rayna’s end comes and she finds peace, she’ll face what she has done. Maybe she’ll even realize how wrong she is about all vampires. They can feel love, loss, and suffering just as well as she can. It’s just probably going to take three years before we get to this place of enlightenment.

Bonnie and Damon Have Each Others’ Backs

This witch is done with sitting on the sidelines and letting other people change her circumstances. She took her own destiny into her hands and cut Enzo’s hand off because she chooses not to lose Damon. Despite all the crazy stunts that he pulls on her, the time they spent trapped in another dimension left him permanently in her heart. So she chose him for herself. No longer does she want to be alone. If there’s anyone that she would have to chose to walk this world with it’d be him. He’s got her back and when she opens the cage and releases Damon and Tyler she was proving that she has his.

Unfortunately, Damon takes protecting Bonnie from himself and the supernatural to a point where he believes her survival can only happen if he removes himself from the equation. He clearly loves her, maybe not in a romantic sense because he’s still starry eyed over Elena, and knows that her lose will cripple him. Removing himself from the situation is as much to protect himself as it is to protect her. He doesn’t want to leave her alone but chooses to leave so he never has to experience truly losing her.

Klaroline: What We’ve Been Waiting For

Klaus knows Caroline better than most and more than she’ll ever admit. He knows that she would give it all up for something she can’t explain from the first moment he hears about the children she gave birth to. His words to her on the phone are reassuring and helps her confirm her love for the child she holds in her arms. It’s also a declaration that for some unfathomable reason, he still doesn’t fully understand, he still holds affection for her in his heart after all this time.

His change of heart to help Stefan is for her. He believes that she deserves all the love, happiness, and best things in life. Since he’s tied down with his life and it’s woes he wants to make sure that she has the best chance to be untroubled by the dangers of the supernatural world. That’s why he tells Stefan to do right by her and let her go, just as he has to let her go. But only for now and for this moment in time. One day he’ll come back for her because she invokes something in him that no one else has: peace, laughter, and happiness.

De-linking Klaus

Severing Klaus’ tie from his entire sire line is a game changing move that throws the gauntlet down for the angst wave coming. Every enemy that he’s ever acquired throughout the centuries will pour into New Orleans to exact revenge. Now Klaus will have to depend on something else beside loyalty because he is the head of a sire line. Well…was. His family is his greatest ally and he needs to unburden himself of any past trespasses/jealousies/anger he holds against them.

Only love and goodwill will keep those he’s known his entire life with him — and more importantly by his side. He stands to learn something from Marcel in this regard. The previous leader of New Orleans has the support of his city, it’s people, and businesses because he takes care of his own. It isn’t just about being a vampire in New Orleans. It’s about protecting your home and respecting it. When Klaus does that he’ll have more than his family to back him against the upcoming storm. It’s going to be a hard lesson that will only be taught by loss and pain because Klaus is as stubborn as they come, even in the face of insurmountable proof.

MVP of the Crossover: Davina Claire

She keeps focused even with all the danger and death around her. No matter how angry she is because of Marcel’s betrayal she frees him from Klaus. Now he can become the man he wants to be without being held back by his sire. She also does this for Kol, because she loves him. Davina is the only one who cares for him enough to touch dark magic continuously. He will repay her by supporting her and giving her the love she desperately wants.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8/7c, and The Originals follows at 9/7c on The CW.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.

  • Yesssss! Bamon consumes my souls. I loved everything Bamon about this episode, and about them in general. LOVED it. Watching Damon and Bonnie put it all on the line for each other is my aesthetic. They love each other so much.
