Suits Review: Live to Fight (Season 5 Episode 12)

Reviews, Suits

Yikes, this is getting bad.

Am I right, or am I right?

This episode of Suits entitled “Live To Fight” focuses a lot on anger. Louis’ anger at Sheila, Donna’s anger at Harvey and her dad, Jessica’s anger at Mike, Jeff’s anger at Jessica, and the wheel keeps turning.

Another major theme? How far everyone is willing to go for the ones they care about. It is nice to see Mike’s unwavering loyalty to Harvey, and Harvey’s unwavering loyalty to Donna. What isn’t so nice to see is Rachel’s willingness to manipulate the situation to save her future, and Donna throwing the blame around about whose fault this is.

But Donna is mad so, I get it. Harvey’s said some pretty nasty things to her in the past, so we can give her a pass on this one. She even apologizes after.

So, it’s fine I guess.

And really, whose fault is this? Because sure, Harvey hired Mike. But Jessica let him, Donna knew, and then Louis agreed to keep his mouth shut so he could have his name on the wall.

It’s everyone’s fault! It’s even Gretchen’s fault! Because she was the one who tipped off Sheila by asking a magazine to do an article on Mike. Gretchen has only really been around for about three episodes, but when she admits to Louis about what she’s done, no one could wish anything bad happen to the woman. Her intentions are good; she just wanted to surprise Harvey. And you can’t really fault her for that.

Which is why, and this may be a controversial statement, it’s hard to fault Harvey for what he did to Donna’s dad. Sure, he could have done it a bit more nicely, but he wouldn’t be Harvey if he did. He was just looking out for her — he wanted to protect her from herself — because we learn that Donna has a huge soft spot for her dad. Hopefully, the writers decide to dig deeper into that for us, because it would be very interesting to see why she has such a soft spot for her.

She follows him blindly and lets him take advantage of her, her money, and maybe even her friends. Donna’s blind eye towards her father can be seen with how riled up she is in the episode; how on edge she is, and how she treats Harvey. We can see the affect Mr. Paulson has on his daughter, when Donna says something to Harvey that I’m pretty sure absolutely no one expected, ever.

Donna: No Harvey, what you did was start this mess the day you went ahead and hired a fraud.

To this point, we only really assumed Harvey was Donna’s weakness. It’s nice to see she has more than him to worry about, but I hope she realizes that Harvey and Mike risked a lot to get her father out of this mess.

Because she’s family. And they care.

They’re all family.

And I guess it boils down to that, doesn’t it? No matter how much they whine and moan at and to each other, they always have each others’ back at PSL, no matter how dirty their hands have to get. Unfortunately, all the lies, betrayal, favors, and anger just brings out out the worst in everyone, and will probably just lead to a lot of resentment and failure in the future.

Suits is getting darker now. It’s not just about winning cases and smudging some lines. It’s about the career, lives and company of our favorite lawyers, and what must be done to protect it. We’ve all seen that Harvey, and Mike are willing to do almost anything for those he cares about.

It’s the other people I’m worried about.

Suits is probably in the stickiest situation it’s ever been in, and I can’t wait to see how and, and if, they’ll be able to get out of this one, without being emotionally and mentally compromised.

Things to think about:

  • When did we start loving Gretchen as much as Donna, everybody? When?
  • When Season 5 came back, this DA seemed to be so badass, and now, she just seems to be getting dumber and dumber. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if she had a very old, personal beef with either Harvey or Jessica
  • Sassy judges are the best judges

  • It is interesting to see how well Harvey is taking all this stress. No more therapy? To be honest, I’m waiting for him to snap.

PS, let’s not forget this whole mess started when Donna winked at Harvey 😉

    • So true! How many times have we seen Harvey just say “I’ll take care of it?” We’ve only seen him snap or breakdown when Donna left, which says a lot; having her in his corner helps him, I think.
