Jane the Virgin: Why We All Need to Be on Team Jane

Forget Michael. Forget Rafael. I think it’s time for us all to be on Team Jane, exclusively.

Jane the Virgin is beginning to suffer from the never ending love triangle from hell that is Jane and Michael and Rafael.

Listen, I get it. Shipping is one of the best parts of a television show. Romance is key to some viewers. In fact, when the romance dies, some people lose interest in a show altogether.

Jane the Virgin started out a quirky and fun telenovela parody. It’s star, Gina Rodriguez, won the hearts of fans everywhere with her unbelievable performance as the titular character who mistakenly gets artificially inseminated with her boss’s sperm.

Viewers watched Jane handle unexpected pregnancy, changes to her life and to the future that the Type-A character had planned, and deal with some serious family drama of her very own.

But the storyline that fans of Jane the Virgin talk about most often is the aforementioned love triangle. Jane’s constant mental battle over which man is right for her has unfortunately been the highlight of the series.

In the show’s infancy, Jane’s struggle with marrying her fiance, Michael, and handling her growing attraction to her baby daddy, Rafael, was fun.

A lot of excellent drama occurred as Jane threw her life choices out the window and left Michael brokenhearted when she decided to follow her heart (and her hormones) to a romance with Rafael.

And when that didn’t quite pan out as she’d hoped, it was exciting to watch her rediscover her love for Michael.

Unfortunately, the series leaned too heavily on the drama and excitement of Team Rafael and Team Michael in its second season, and now fans have grown tired of it. In just ten episodes, we’ve watched Jane with Rafael, then with Michael, then Rafael again, then back on Michael. It’s been a whirlwind of emotions that’s really left a sour taste in the mouths of many.

A bright light on the horizon appears to be the budding romance between Jane and her writing professor, Jonathan Chavez, and many fans of the show are already declaring that they are #TeamWritingProfessor.

Here’s my take though; I think it’s time for everyone to take a step back and just fall on Team Jane.

Jane’s life has been a whirlwind as far as romance goes. We sometimes forget that Jane, just plain Jane Villanueva, is a powerhouse in her own right.

That’s why I’m declaring myself Team Jane.

Jane is balancing being a mom and chasing her dreams. She’s determined. She’s smart. Most importantly, Jane is funny. Watching her navigate everyday moments is a treat, and I feel, the more compelling story of this telenovela.

The writers at Jane the Virgin have done an incredible job this season of showing the ups and downs of motherhood, using such realism, frustration, and the unspoken feelings that many new moms experience. Jane is a hero to new mommies who’ve never had someone to really relate to on television.

Add in the inspiring message in the fact that she’s not giving up writing, and still working toward her dreams of being an author and…wow.

All of that without Michael. Without Rafael. My goodness, how could we all not fall on Team Jane?

So while I wouldn’t mind seeing Jane move away from Michael and Rafael, and take on a new romance, I more-so want to watch Jane be awesome for a little while, without a man.

Is it so hard to believe that this show can be successful if its heroine is a single mom, one who’s just fabulous at everyday life, without a constant battle between alpha males for her affection?

I think not.

Let’s just watch Jane be amazing for a little while, and see how she grows apart from the men in her life. Let’s also give those guys a chance to show us why they’re even worthy of her affections any longer. Both Michael and Rafael need time away from Jane to develop themselves, something that’s not lost on me as I write mostly about Jane.

A nice Team Jane break is what Jane the Virgin needs right now, for everyone, fans and characters alike. Do you agree? Share your thoughts below!
