iZombie Review: Physician, Heal Thy Selfie (Season 2 Episode 12)
Apologies for the late review, guys, but my computer crashed– which makes it kind of ironic since this on week’s episode of iZombie, Liz eats the brain of a girl who was addicted to her electronics and social media. Social media killed the video star. Wait, that’s not how that goes.
Is the Universe trying to tell me something?
On “Physician, Heal Thy Selfie,” Liv is starving and unfortunately for her, the victims of a triple murder are left without their heads, literally. So, no brains for you Liv. If we have no brains then how do we find out what happened to these guys? This is the part of the season where everything starts connecting. Lucky for us, the three murder victims have a connection to multiple storylines from the start of the season. Yay! Things are connecting. It’s almost too much, I could say.
I don’t like it when the Plot B storylines don’t connect with the Plot A storylines until the second to last episode of the season. That’s just mean and drags down a good show. Turns out that these guys are connected to Stacy Boss, the guy that Peyton is trying to bring down. While on Social media maven brain, we encounter a millennial age Liv who tweets about all the mundane things of her life while cyber stalking her new boo, Drake. You can’t ghost a guy when you tweet 23 times a day, Liv. That’s like avoiding someone’s text but then liking their twitter status. Really?
I wish Liv would’ve had the chance to play up her “psychic” abilities with Babineaux a bit more than what the show gave her. It was too simple and convenient that she stumbled on the heads of the guys in District Attorney Baracus’ fridge. There was no challenge for Liv on the detective side of things. If you’re going to give her murder victims with no brains, then can we at least see the ramifications and the escapades of that?
Instead, we get Liv on brains of a social media addict, which doesn’t lead to anything interesting, either. It’s a commentary on all of our addictions to the internet, but does it move the story forward? “Physician, Heal thy Selfie” is good episode of iZombie, not great. There’s some potential for throwing challenges Liv’s way as a morgue attendant, but we don’t get that. It feels like there was no real reason for the brains Liv was on other than to have a funny brain for the week.
What did Liv learn from her brain? In the past, it felt as though Liv always learned a little bit about herself and her new life based on the brain she ate.
We get to have Stacey Boss back in the picture, though, which I have to say is so much fun as a viewer. He is such a delicious villain. I am always a fan of a bad guy who is super evil, but you still kind of like him. That’s what makes Blaine tolerable.
I’m glad to see how the show continues to connect all their characters, but I would like to have more than a procedural brain of the week trope for Liv. Let’s get some brains in there that aren’t just for the funny but teaches us something.
Overall Thoughts
- I miss Minor. I wonder what he’s doing now. Do you think he found a kind family that won’t abandon him? Side-eye to you Major.
- Drake’s Mom is fun. Wait? Where is Liv’s Mom? Have we seen her family at all this season?
- Vaughn Du Clark is still the worst but I understand his anger towards internet trolls.
- I hope Major has a plan. Like, a real plan and not a fly by the seat of his pants plan.
- Babineaux still doesn’t know about Zombies. How long are we going to go with this?
- Nice to see Ravi and Peyton back to being friends again.
- More back story for Ravi, please?
