Supergirl Review: Childish Things (Season 1 Episode 10)
This week’s Supergirl hits home for the geek squad when Winn’s father escapes from prison. A cowardly toy maker turned murderer wreaks havoc on National City in his twisted attempt to get back together with his son.
Throughout “Childish Things,” an episode aptly named, we see that Kara loves Winn, and Winn loves Kara. However, they don’t love each other the same way–Kara cares very deeply about Winn, but in her eyes they’re just friends. Unfortunately, Winn wants more than she is willing to give.
Kara: If you weren’t in my life, I would be lost too.
It’s been clear to us, if not to Kara that Winn has had feelings for her for a while now. And thanks to his run in with his father, Winn decides he can’t be quiet about them anymore. Winn’s father became a villain by bottling up his feelings until they resulted in an explosion and Winn has essentially done the same. While Kara is trying to comfort Winn and help capture his father without anyone getting hurt, he kisses her.
Now, I understand that it’s not fair to Winn to expect him to keep his feelings inside and silently pine after Kara forever. And Kara can’t have her way either and expect nothing to change between them. I just really don’t want to see Winn pressure her into having feelings that she just doesn’t have. We need more positive male/female friendships on television that aren’t tainted by worn out romance tropes.
Back at Catco, Cat offers Lucy Lane, Jimmy’s girlfriend and Lois Lane’s sister, a job as her legal counsel. Lucy proves to be nothing like her sister Lois, much to Cat’s delight as the two are sworn enemies working at separate news outlets. I really, really like Cat and Lucy. Along with Alex, the two of them prove that you don’t have to be an alien to have girl power.
Lucy: Did you know ninety percent of Catco companies are ran by women?
Jimmy seems to have a bit of apprehension over Lucy’s new position at Catco, but unlike Cat’s assumptions that it’s because of his feelings for Kara, he reveals that it’s made him realize he misses being out on the streets with his camera. I loved seeing Lucy and Jimmy work through this issue in a very mature way, and I’m very excited to see Lucy more often!
Other thoughts:
- Guys, I really, really don’t like Max Lord. He has Alex in his phone as Mata Hari and now he’s attached a camera to her purse to spy on her. Now he’s learned that Kara/Supergirl is her sister. And we still don’t know what he’s doing with the Jane Doe with black eyes locked up in his lab.
- Cat Grant continues to be the epitome of life goals.
-
Cat: As much as I love watching you millennials deny your feelings, I pay you not to have them.
