The Originals Review: The Axeman’s Letter (Season 3 Episode 5)
This episode of The Originals, titled “The Axeman’s Letter,” draws the sire lines closer together with the arrival of Aurora, Tristan’s sister and Klaus’ ex-lover. She’s the new crazy vampire that will reveal hidden truths in a killer dress.
The show doesn’t forget everyone else either. A little Marcel, Cami, Hayley, and Jackson are sprinkled throughout so you don’t forget that all of their stories are intertwined.
Let’s talk about it.
The Good: Marcel uncovers the truth & Jackson and Hayley are freed
Last week’s episode was a showcase of how Marcel’s abilities weren’t used. This week, it’s a different story. Elijah and Marcel have fallen into an alliance and followed Tristan to a building owned by Lucien’s company. What a surprise! The kids are working together to take out their daddies. But that doesn’t make sense. Why are they doing this if a witch prophesied the death of opposing sire lines?
The most likely theory is that they are operating simultaneously to break their bonds to Klaus and Elijah. Both are aware of their impending death and are using their powerful companies to research and get out of this raw vampire deal. They’ve already found a cure to a werewolf bite, so why not go for more? Tristan and Lucien are going to continue pitting the Mikaelson brothers against each other as an insurance policy, while assuring they’ll survive the great Originals battle on the horizon.
On the werewolf side of things, Hayley and Jackson are released from the spell binding them to Davina. The question now is, what will they do with it? They are keenly aware of the effects of losing it all and will tread carefully. This small family can choose if they’ll help the young Regent or become a super pack with hybrids, vampires, and wolves? They might even surprise us and fight for a simple life consisting of Hayley, Jackson, and Hope (with Klaus glaring across the way and Elijah making heart eyes?) Whatever they choose will affect the sire line dispute in the next couple of episodes.
The Bad: The love story. . .no one cared about.
Is physical suffering and second hand embarrassment something we can undergo through a TV? It must be, because it’s all one could experience while watching the love story behind Klaus and Aurora de Martel.
First off is her name. It’s straight out of Sleeping Beauty and paints a picture of a blonde haired beauty under a spell that can only be broken by her true love. This version of Aurora is redheaded and under the spell of Klaus’ blonde curls and accent. He’s her true love and the only way to stay with him forever is to fall to the vampire curse.
Now on to the boring typical love story. Girl meets mysterious guy and falls in love. She wants to be with him forever but wait…he’s dangerous. This is the exact story for dozens of vampire romance novels. Mix it up! Make her focused on her own life, family, and something other than the man she swooning over! Oh, and let’s not forget that Aurora is crazy, but wicked smart. She is going to do anything to safeguard her love (Klaus) and her sire (Rebekah.) Even if it means killing her own brother. That’s how insane she is!
All we get from Klaus, the other half of this love story are his bedroom eyes. He can be in a room full of people or sitting across from Aurora and his eyes will hold that same gleam. He wants her but knows that he’s too broken/jaded and they must keep their love secret to survive.
The Ugly: Cami arrested & Klaus/Elijah fight
Cami getting arrested in her dark objects treasure trove is something no one sees coming. Sure, cute cop follows her around like a lost stalker puppy, but did he really need to arrest her to get her attention? He could do it by batting those eyes at her and asking for the truth while giving it. Klaus is going to raise hell when he finds out, bringing with him the crazy Aurora. Knowing Cami she’ll look upon this flash from the past with abject horror. She does not want to be part of a weird love triangle. She’s too busy dealing with her new prison digs to worry about ex-lovers.
The Klaus and Elijah blow out has been something bubbling up and waiting to explode for seasons! This isn’t just a simple brawl they have. No, Klaus is livid because he feels like Elijah set him on his path to destruction and lonely disillusionment.
Klaus bites Elijah! Without a doubt this will send him to Lucien. His progeny will throw down conditions to have the cure with some sweet words on the side to lure him to Team Lucien. Elijah will side with his progeny. But he’s at an advantage, in comparison to Klaus, because he knows that Lucien is working with Tristan. It’s an undercover job at its best.
Closing
Next week’s trailer clues us into a couple possibilities. The smirks and smiles that Elijah and Klaus give each other suggests that they might use this fight to their advantage and keep their promise to not fall by the others hand. They could trick their ‘children’ to believe that things are deteriorating between them to figure what their true motives are. It’s time to stop listening to that ridiculous witch/prophet and make their own futures. Like Hayley and Jackson, New Orleans is their home and they want to keep it safe for Hope.
Why not start protecting it by killing your firstborns?

I’m interested to see how the Davina and Hayley dynamic plays out now that Davina has lifted the curse and made up with Hayley (also loved the song they used for that scene, “What the Hell” by Adam Jones). It could be a really strong alliance, or they could just as easily turn on each other – and honestly I couldn’t really guess which is more likely.
Davina and Hayley are so driven to survive in this chaotic supernatural world. While I love the idea of them turning on each other…wouldn’t it be different if they formed an alliance? And not by forcing each others hands but because they care for each other? With a bond developed by choice they’ll fight tooth and nail to protect each other, come what may.
Yes on the music! The Originals always manages to nab amazing singers who blend in with the world created. Truly amazing to discover new artists from this show.
