10 Most Touching Moments on The Vampire Diaries

Lists, The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries gets a lot crap for being a supernatural teen romance show, chock-full of love triangles, sexy blood drinking, and wonky mythology. And okay… that’s all very true.

But what most people don’t give The Vampire Diaries enough credit for are the mind-bending, soul-crushing, how-do-I-even-go-on moments that appear more often than you’d think and pretty much leave you a mess of emotions. The writing on this show is just phenomenal, and that deserves all the recognition in the world.

Rather than focus on the best romantic moments of the series (we’d need a list of at least 50 to do that one justice), we picked out the 10 most poignant moments in The Vampire Diaries history that really just hit home in a big way.

1. Elena Doesn’t Want to Be a Vampire

Facing down her last day as a human, Elena and Stefan shared a long conversation about the pros and cons of being a vampire that culminated in one of the most heartbreaking confessions of their relationship. Elena admitted that she never wanted to join Stefan in immortality, no matter how much she loved him. And Stefan, wonderful soul that he is, understood and accepted that completely.

2. Enzo Wants to Thank Maggie

We’re pretty sure this is the moment that Enzo went from a fan favorite to ‘IF YOU EVER KILL HIM I WILL COME FOR YOU IN THE NIGHT’ territory. TVD tends to focus on the romantic relationships more than anything, so this speech was a refreshing and heartbreaking change of pace. All Enzo wanted was to thank Maggie for giving him hope in his darkest days.

3. Caroline Can Have 1000 More Birthdays

Caroline flourished when she became a vampire, and she let it change her in all the best ways. More than anything, this scene opened up a world of possibilities and a positive outlook on immortality that that we hadn’t seen on TVD yet. In this beautiful monologue, Klaus told her that vampirism didn’t have to be a desolate, shameful, monstrous thing; it can be a blessing, so long as you let it.

4. Bonnie Can’t Take the Loneliness

In what is possibly Kat Graham’s best performance on record, Bonnie decides to end her life in the prison world after going so long without any human contact. In theory, trapping someone in an alternate dimension seems like a compelling plot device, but The Vampire Diaries did more than just lock Bonnie away. It showed the torture and isolation of her story in an incredibly moving and realistic way.

5. Love Changes Us

A lot of Damon’s relationship with Andie Starr was… problematic to say the least. But this one moment between them hit us harder than a ton of bricks because through her compelled haze, Andie managed to impart that one beautiful line of wisdom that Damon just can’t seem to comprehend.  Love changes us.
