Tell-Tale TV Picks of the Week: Doctor Who, Empire, and Grey’s Anatomy Deliver Favorite Moments

Tell-Tale TV Picks of the Week

The first week of Fall TV has come and gone. We’ve caught up with some old friends and even met some new ones.

Wedding bells chimed on The Big Bang Theory. Grey’s Anatomy returned to its roots while Annalise resumed classes and the murder insanity along with them on How To Get Away with Murder. Another mysterious chapter started up on Heroes Reborn. We got one step closer to taking down Malvado on From Dusk Till Dawn.

What moments shined the brightest, and which were we better off not having to see? See what our writers had to say!

1. Best moment:

Lyra: Have to go with Doctor Who for this one. Davros, the creator of the Daleks, managed to weave a tale of woe that I fell for! That wrinkled raisin made me question who this villainous creature was and if he could be redeemed. Of course, spoilers ahead, he betrays The Doctor with an evil laugh that should win an award. Still kicking myself for falling for that.

Lizzie: Leonard and Penny FINALLY, finally get married. The Big Bang Theory fans have only been waiting for these two to take the plunge for nine seasons. NINE seasons of figuring out if they fit, if they could blend their lives, if they could support each other and love each other through good times, bad times and Sheldon. Nine years of commitment issues, of one contrived obstacle after another, and …they finally did it. With their friends kinda there, and prepared vows from Leonard and improvised ones from Penny, this couple at last went from will-they-or-won’t-they to figuring out custody of Sheldon — and we couldn’t be happier!

Allison: Santánico learning that she’s a goddess on From Dusk Till Dawn. Whenever we learned that she was a goddess, I figured she was aware of that fact. Turns out, no one decided to fill her in. When Carlos brought Santánico to that pueblo and showed her the truth, you could just see all the emotions running through her. It was such a fantastic character moment. This is a woman who is well aware of the fact that her innocence has been ripped away from her. She lives in a prison of vengeance, and while she doesn’t view herself as a monster, Santánico can’t grasp the idea that people pray to her for salvation. To her, she’s just a girl who was forced to dance and bring in souls as a way to serve the Nine Lords.

Ashley: It’s kind of a small one but it’s one that speaks volumes. I have to pick the end scene of Grey’s Anatomy when Meredith and her sisters smash that wall. I think it’s the most significant in terms of reminding us how Grey’s Anatomy used to be, and letting us know that we’re going back to that style and those kinds of stories.

Amanda: By far, my favorite TV moment this week was on Empire when Lucious tells Frankie that he loves Cookie and that any war with Cookie is a war with him. I just want them to be back together so, SO badly and it’s clear that’s a long way away, but this scene shows that it could happen.

2. Most shocking scene:

Lyra: Most shocking scene goes to Fear the Walking Dead. This Sunday’s episode, titled ‘Not Fade Away’ had the characters seeing a different side to the National Guard that protected them. After reporting a mysterious, yet smart, light in the ‘abandoned’ city beyond their barriers, Madison climbs to the roof of her home. She’s observing the home where the light came from, when the house erupts in flashing lights and gun shots. The National Guard went over to the home and killed the humans there! Technically they could have been infected, but evidence shown earlier let us know that the National Guard were killing all humans, infected or not!

Lizzie: Beckett saves Castle. Look, we didn’t know what was going on for about half the episode, and we still didn’t know when Beckett showed up to rescue Castle, but we sure appreciated it. Because the show is called Castle, so, without him, it doesn’t really work. And, yes, we’re still confused about the whole I love you, can’t talk, bye thing, but on the plus side, both of them are alive. (The cliffhanger was still awful, okay. Awful.)

Allison: Lucas dying on Continuum! I spent the majority of the episode waiting for Garza to die. There were so many signs, and since it’s the final season and all, you just know that there were going to be some deaths. I never expected Lucas to be the one to die. He’s really been a great part of this season, and he lights up a room.

Ashley: On How to Get Away With Murder, Annalise bleeding out on the floor. Need I say anything else?

Amanda: I was still shocked by Deacon being alive on Nashville this week. Even though we found out early in the episode, I still breathed a sigh of relief when he walked into the room.

3. Storyline we could do without:

Lyra: Leonard and Penny getting married on The Big Bang Theory. This couple didn’t work from the beginning but for some reason the showrunners kept pushing it down our throats. Leonard’s habit of seeing Penny as an object to be won instead of a person always turned me off from the couple. The Big Bang Theory always seems to sacrifice chemistry if it gives the audiences a few laughs. This dull example of a wedding is a prime example.

Lizzie: Callen going rogue, again, on NCIS: LA. Every two seasons Callen goes rogue for one reason or another, and honestly, it’s getting boring. He never really goes rogue anyway, so it’s like false advertising. If he’s going to go rogue, let him go rogue for real, don’t solve everything in one episode. This man has literal skeletons in his closet, it’s time the show took advantage of that.

Allison: It’s not really a storyline, but all of the Annalise and Wes scenes from this week’s How To Get Away With Murder. Their chemistry freaks me out, and it doesn’t help that the show plays off that. Not only did she cook him dinner, but then she asked him to dance at this underground club? Ew. No. Make it stop.

Ashley: Leonard and Penny fighting on The Big Bang Theory. I’m so disappointed in how their wedding was handled. I think they had good moments, as Lizzie references above, but I don’t think the payoff was big enough. Even worse was the fact that it was overshadowed by their unresolved issues. Can they please just be happy?

Amanda: Scarlett and Gunnar’s will they or won’t they thing on Nashville. It’s just been going on for too long now.

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER - "It's Time to Move On" - Annalise and her students must move on with their lives as though nothing has happened, but the students are still reeling over Rebecca's disappearance. Only Annalise and Frank know that Rebecca was murdered and the two are determined to find out who killed her. Meanwhile, Annalise decides she wants to take on a new client, a brother and sister who are accused of killing their parents. And an old friend surprises Annalise at home and teaches her a valuable lesson, on the highly anticipated season premiere of "How to Get Away with Murder," THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 24 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. 4. Character of the week:

Lyra: Missy from Doctor Who. The ever elegant Time Lady, was on point with every little quip and tease. From teasing Clara as she sharpened a stick for hunting, to going on a wild ramble in a Southern accent as she killed a Dalek. This woman only keeps on getting better and better with each scene. Can I have a show with just Missy in it? Her jumping around the universe causing general mischief and mayhem?

Lizzie: Sam Hanna, NCIS: LA. The Callen going rogue storyline, or for that matter, most storylines, don’t work without Sam Hanna’s calm, collected presence. He’s like a zen master with big bulging muscles, witty banter and tight shirts, and yet he’s almost always on Callen’s shadow. Not this week. This time it was Sam’s turn to shine.

Allison: I’m cheating and picking two: Richie and Seth Gecko, From Dusk Till Dawn. My boys were finally reunited, and it was glorious. They basically picked up right where they left off with the banter and mockery. I mean their very first scene together involved Richie being upset that Seth saved his life. As much as I loved seeing Seth and Richie partner up with the women in their lives (Kate is definitely the woman in Seth’s life. Fight me.), it just can’t compare to the Geckos riding again. “Here’s to getting rich and fat, and dying in the arms of a beautiful woman.”

Ashley: Miranda Bailey! This is the version of Bailey we like to see on Grey’s Anatomy, you guys. The one who gives an awesome presentation while simultaneously performing surgery, and telling everyone what is what. Chief Bailey for the win.

Amanda: Lucious Lyons on Empire! Prison cannot keep him down (or even keep him out of the recording game!).

Allison is in a love affair with television that doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon. Slightly damaged fictional characters are her weakness. She loves to spend her free time curled up with a cat and a show to binge-watch. Allison is a Tomatometer-approved critic (Rotten Tomatoes).
