Heroes Reborn Series Premiere Review: What Will Save the World This Time?

Squeals! Feels! Nostalgia all around!

Does anyone else feel the same way after watching the two-hour premiere of Heroes Reborn, “Brave New World” and “Odessa”?

And gosh, do they deal with some dark matters.

I was so worried, yet curious, yet nervous when they announced they’d be reviving Heroes. Then I was sad, and scared, and nervous when I was told Hayden Panettiere and Zachary Quinto wouldn’t return.

But of course, of course, Tim Kring knows what he’s doing.I should have had more faith in him — because, believe it or not, ten years ago — Heroes was the first show I got hooked on and watched regularly. It was my decent into writing reviews and critiquing. It sailed my ship.

And wow, was the nostalgia real in these first two episodes.

We were all told that Claire would be dead when the show started, but what I wasn’t banking on was that no one would know why! It’s a nice twist, and it will be very interesting to see Noah react when he finds out the real story.

The show starts off five years after the original show’s run. Anyone with powers is being hunted, and so, they are either running or dead. I like that this sets the tone of the series. This isn’t an origin story. We’re not watching Claire freak out and record herself. No, so far—everyone we’re introduced to knows they have powers, and are just trying to figure out what to do about it.

These first two hours pretty much set up the rest of the season. We see that Noah has no real recollection from the day of the attack and sets out on a mission to understand. His soon to be wife gives off a bit of a creepy vibe, like she was planted there to watch him and make sure he doesn’t remember too much; because remember, Noah never answered if he called the police.

We are introduced to new characters; some we love! (Tommy!) and some we hate! (Luke! Joanne!). We see the struggles of both sides. Evos, running scared and humans, wanting revenge for loved ones, or are just scared of what they don’t understand.

While it is hard to keep track of all the new places and all the new characters, I can only assume that they will all end up at the same location at some point in the season.

The only quarrel I have with the storyline is the Katana Girl. It just doesn’t seem to fit well with the rest of the plots. While Noah is in Odessa, trying to regain his memory, and Tommy is trying to control his powers, and Carlos is coming to terms with who he really is, being able to play in a video game seems childish and not very creative.

That, and at points, it seems like the creators banked a bit too much on the audience already knowing what happened during the whole Heroes series. Heroes Reborn definitely feels like a lot like Heroes, but it should strive to be it’s own show. One that could maybe sum up plot points from Heroes that are relevant and important, but also move past them as well.

So many questions are left unanswered in these first two hours, and I can only really hope that we get some answers sooner rather than later, along with some of the old cast (and fan favorites), such as Hiro, Mohinder, and the Haitian. Noah needs to get his memory back, and Molly (we missed you so much Molly) needs to help him.

All we really know right now is that “it’s coming.” What it is, or why it is happening still remains to be seen. But if this premiere is any indication, it will be absolutely badass.
