Teen Wolf Mid-Season Finale Review: Status Asthmaticus (Season 5 Episode 10)
This week’s final episode of Teen Wolf Season 5A, titled “Status Asthmaticus,” tore at the last threads keeping the McCall Pack together, threw us for a tailspin of feelings, and was heavily Theo-centric. Feels like everything has been about him lately, right?
Let’s get back on track.
All the mysterious moves he’s been making for weeks have finally added up to reveal his game plan. Theo wants to make a pack of his own consisting of Stiles, Lydia, Malia, Kira, and Liam.
Basically, he wants the All-Stars of the McCall Pack.
Through devious planning, Theo tries to hit the last nail in the McCall Pack coffin. His methods vary across the group of friends: He is brash and forward with Stiles about his plans, which earns him multiple punches in the face (and cheers from viewers). He traps Scott in the Beacon Hills Library, effectively cutting him off from everyone but not stopping him from fighting for them. He sets a devastated and angry Liam upon Scott for not turning Hayden. And he leaves Lydia in a state of shock and panic after attacking her.
Does anyone need to be held back?
Theo continues on his mission for pack domination with his approach on Malia. While exploring her old grounds in the forest, a coyote approaches her and reveals that he is Theo! Wait, you say? How is this possible? Theo is not an Alpha and can’t transform like that!
Well, apparently he’s a perfectly naked, tousled hair, and chiseled jaw, chimera!

He is the first successful trial of the Dread Doctors. And everything is suddenly clear for those trying to figure out what the heck is going on. He must have felt alone in that warped home made by the Doctors. And when he heard about Beacon Hills…oh how he trembled in want. This town was to be a new life. Maybe even an escape from the Doctor’s hold on him, with a pack of his own.
Ugghhhh, Theo. I can’t talk about you right now. Let’s move on to something else.
Our favorite Sheriff’s Deputy is finally revealed as a hell-hound, a harbinger of death like Lydia. While our gang scrambles to find out the true mission of the Dread Doctors, Parrish sets about retrieving and delivering the bodies to the Nemeton. Fortunately, when Parrish escapes his cell, Stiles quickly intervenes and prevents the death of more officers. The Department really can’t keep on going through Deputies like that.
Now, let’s talk about deaths. We have near misses, resurrections, and some unknown fates in this episode.

Melissa McCall has our hearts in a panic in her fight for her son’s life. She didn’t move an inch until his eyes flew open, a mighty roar erupting from him. GO MAMA MCCALL! Hayley and her gang of dead chimeras, come back to life after Theo injects them with some unknown Dread Doctor concoction. It comes from a glass enclosure with a stitched up body floating inside that’s enough to scare anyone away!
And lastly…the Sheriff. When given the choice to go after his father or Scott, Stiles decision was always clear. His father comes first. We were shown only mere glimpses of a collapsed and bloody Sheriff being rescued by his son.
Our pack is suffering, on the brink of falling apart, Roscoe is long gone (a moment of silence), and what is running through my mind?
DEREK!
Braeden makes an appearance. She’s here to warn Malia that the Desert Wolf is on the hunt for her. It’s a brilliant reintroduction that leaves us waiting in bated breath for the inevitable Derek appearance. But did it happen?! NO! The summer finale was a prime opportunity to bring that bunny toothed, stubble covered beta back into our lives. That was let down number one.
Let down number two is the lack of Sciles (Scott and Stiles). They needed screen time! They have to work on their relationship. But we didn’t get anything, except Scott thinking he’s lost his pack and Stiles thinking he’s lost his best friend.
How the hell are we supposed to survive until Teen Wolf’s return next year?
Scott’s mission for the second half of season five is to fix this hot mess. He needs to unite and repair his pack. Theo is going to try again. This isn’t the end of him and we all know it. His buddies, the Dread Doctors, have a hell-hound doomsday planned! We all saw that crazy painting and know that it was mostly likely Parrish versus a wolf. Also, the Desert Wolf is approaching swiftly. She’s going to bring her own set of troubles and Beacon Hills needs a team to take them all down!
The second half of the season has started production, and we can’t wait! Until then, all we can do is feed into the fandom theories and speculations (maybe even in the comments section below.)
