From Dusk Till Dawn: 10 Hopes for Season 2
My current obsession is From Dusk Till Dawn the series.
It’s a not all that well-known series on El Rey Network that is based on a cult movie of the same name. Never heard of the movie? Don’t worry. I had no knowledge of anything about the show when I binge-watched it back in May. If you need a show to watch, I highly recommend it.
From Dusk Till Dawn is about Richie and Seth Gecko, bank robbers extraordinaire. They are on the run from law enforcement when we meet up with them, and after the events of episode one, they have an out-for-blood Texas Ranger after them. Along the way, they kidnap the Fuller family, who is attempting to have a vacation and sort out their family’s many problems. Soon, thanks to fate and Richie’s weird visions, the Geckos and Fullers find themselves fighting in a supernatural war at a bar down in Mexico.
Season 2 of From Dusk Till Dawn is slowly approaching (August 25 is too far away), and in order to help ease the hiatus pain, I’ve come up with my hopes for Season 2:
1. Richie and Seth reunite.
I need my Gecko boys back together again! For the longest time, it was the two of them against the world, and I need their relationship to be mended. Sure, they’ve got some issues to work out like Richie killing their dad and the whole turning into a culebra and picking a girl he just met over his own brother, but hey, they can do it.
If you’ve seen the season two trailer (if you haven’t, you can check it out below), then you know Seth is on drugs, most likely to try to dull the pain that Richie caused. Seth’s in a dark place without his brother, and even though Richie seems to be doing fine kicking ass with Santánico, the Gecko brothers are stronger together. I’m all for Richie spreading his wings (does he have wings like Santánico does?) and learning to be a badass thief by himself, but this needs to be a temporary situation.
2. Freddie doesn’t break all of our hearts.
Honestly, I am almost positive Freddie is going to be causing us all some serious pain this season. He did return to his family and his baby girl, but we know it’s not going to last. Even if Freddie didn’t have some supernatural warrior skills running through his blood, we’ve already seen that Kate and Scott go to him for help. Freddie is going to get dragged back into this. The most I can hope for is that him and his family survive. Is it too much to just want Freddie to be happy?
3. Santánico gets justice for being used as a slave.
The whole first season was about Santánico trying to break free of her captors. She lured Richie to the Titty Twister to ensure her freedom. It would be sad if after all of that, she didn’t kick some Nine Lords’ ass. She’s with Richie now, so the the two of them are probably doing some scheming. There’s really no other explanation for Santánico wearing an apron and hair net working in some sort of butcher shop. Still, there are some big obstacles in her way.
There’s Carlos, who probably wants to get some sort of revenge for her choosing Richie over him. The photo of him shirtless surrounded by fire makes him look like the time in the room swinging at nothing made him a stronger man (seriously, what was he fighting in there?).
As if Carlos wasn’t enough, we’ve got two new baddies: Lord Malvado with his coat of faces and the Regulator, who likes to jam out to rap mixes. These two mean business, and hopefully, Santánico survives the season without being forced back into dancing at the Titty Twister. She’s traveled to Texas, worn leather, and experienced the finer things in life; she can’t go back now.
4. Seth and Kate talk about what they mean to each other — or at least show that they care in some way.
Ever since storming into their motel room and taking the Fullers hostage, Seth has shown concern for Kate: “You do what I tell you when I tell you, and you’ll get out of this without any bumps or scrapes.” He’s defended her honor when Sex Machine got crude, and he made sure she didn’t get shot when Freddie brought cops to the motel, which happened maybe five minutes after they met. I’m not saying I want romance between these two, but it would be great to have both of them explore what they feel towards each other — or at least question why they are still partnered up.
Kate, the preacher’s daughter, went with this professional bank robber because there was no one else and nowhere else to go after the Titty Twister. But, it’s been three months and they’re still together. They have some sort of feelings that go further than platonic friendship. If they didn’t care about each other, they wouldn’t look out for one another.
Kate being Seth’s drug enabler doesn’t really scream, “I care about you,” but she could have left him and stolen all their money one day when he was high. It doesn’t look like she has. Seth hasn’t abandoned her either. There’s something there, and the two of them need to talk about it with someone.
5. No one I love dies!
Seth is on drugs, and that makes me nervous. You can’t be on drugs when there’s culebras and people with guns after you. Gotta stay sharp, Seth. Plus, there’s too many guns around for there not to be a death or two, and since Malvado called in the Regulator, you know things are about to get a whole lot worse.
What’s really bad is I love our core cast. I don’t want anyone to die, and someone is most likely going to. It’s not like From Dusk Till Dawn is a happy show full of rainbows or anything. I don’t think it will be one of the Geckos, but honestly, everyone is up for grabs.
I’m really concerned about Scott. We can’t lose another Fuller! Scott’s a kid who just got turned into a culebra, and he’s probably not handling it well, especially since he’s around Carlos so much. If Scott dies, not only would I miss him, I would have to watch what his death does to Kate, and I haven’t recovered from her killing her dad yet.
6. I don’t hate Sonja.
I really want to like her. I don’t think I’m that person who immediately hates a new character because they join the show as a love interest for a main character on the show, but I’m concerned about Sonja. Not only is Seth really not in the place for a relationship, I also don’t trust new people.
Sonja is already someone who isn’t what she seems. She does tattoos, makes fake passports, and who knows what else. There’s an element of shady built into her immediately, and so, how do I know I can trust her with Seth? Yes, I know Seth Gecko is a bank robber, so he can handle himself, but right now, he’s vulnerable.
Essentially, what I want is for Sonja to be more than a distraction who takes Kate’s place as Seth’s partner in crime. I want there to be something likeable and interesting about her, something that makes me root for her survival. We could use another strong female on this show, and maybe Sonja will step up to the challenge.
We’ve already seen that she and Seth go on the run together (or at least go visit his Uncle Eddie), so we know she’s sticking around for a bit. Now, I know Seth is all sorts of handsome, but what made Sonja leave everything to go away with Seth?
7. Richie is still Richie (minus the crazy). Scott is still Scott.
We don’t really know how turning into a culebra affects a person (other than the obvious new diet and sunlight allergy). Hopefully, it’s not like becoming a vampire on Buffy the Vampire Slayer where you lose your soul. I mean, does Richie still love horchata? We need to know!
One of the reasons for my concerns is that we’ve seen Scott struggling with being a culebra. He seems to not be entirely in control of his hunger or maybe not eating at all (as evident in the clip of him reuniting with Freddie), and even though Scott did try to shoot Richie in season one, he’s not the violent type. The girl asking, “are you dangerous, Scott?” is probably going to die — or at least come very close to it.
I have hope that our boys are still more or less themselves because we haven’t seen any indication that Richie has changed at all. He still seems to be the same, but maybe unlike Scott, Richie is feeding on people. Richie and Scott have different moral compasses, so maybe Richie isn’t having a tough time adjusting to his new diet. It’s hard to tell. I just need a scene with Richie and horchata, and then I’ll be okay.
8. Kate and Santánico get some scenes together.
These two badass women haven’t interacted really at all, and it’s a shame. The first time they are in a room together probably will be a little tense. Watching them size each other up would be really interesting. They come from two completely different worlds, and they’re both strong women in their own way. They could have an interesting friendship.
9. Vanessa returns.
I mean, why would you not want to see Adrianne Palicki again? I’m pretty sure she is in jail after she helped Seth escape, but I would love for her to return. We could even have a flashback! That way we could see more of Vanessa, and get to see what her marriage to Seth was like. It’s really hard to picture Seth married. Plus, I really want to see how she reacts to the whole “my brother is a culebra” news.
Vanessa spent time with Richie whenever Seth was in jail. She saw Richie when he was in his “living in the woods” crazy place. A flashback could help show their relationship, which I’m sure is unusual, and it could highlight a darker/weirder place that Richie has been in. I also really want Vanessa and Santánico to meet.
10. Freddie doesn’t actually arrest or kill the Geckos.
As much as I love Freddie and understand that he wants to do the right thing by putting bank robbers away, I love my Geckos. It seems doubtful that Freddie is just going to forget the whole thing where Richie and Seth killed his partner, but maybe Freddie can focus on something else instead. There are other criminals out there, or he can turn his sights on culebras (other than Richie). Revenge isn’t healthy, Freddie.

I cannot fully put into words my excitement for Season 2 of From Dusk Till Dawn. If you haven’t seen it yet, you have time to watch all ten episodes of Season 1 on Netflix before it starts.
