Nashville Review: Time Changes Things (Season 3 Episode 20)

Nashville, Reviews

This week’s episode of Nashville, Time Changes Things, was all about the fathers. Read on for the breakdown of who was a good parent and who wasn’t. Spoilers ahead.

The bad:

  • Slick Teddy  – Once again, the worst father award goes to Teddy. For some ridiculous reason, the hooker felt the need to tip Teddy off that the Feds were about to bust him. Instead of coming clean, he grabs his passport and says one last goodbye to his girls (without telling them that it’s a goodbye goodbye). To help soothe the pain he buys them each a gold heart necklace from Tiffany & Co. They act like they love it, even though I’m pretty sure daughters of a famous singer and rich Mayor father would expect more. You’ve already embezzled… go for the diamonds, Teddy. I mean, honestly. At the eleventh hour, however, an attorney general/groomsmen in Teddy’s wedding seems to want to strike a deal. I’m guessing Teddy still isn’t going to get what he deserves. Ugh.
  • Parentless Micah – the Micah story line pops back up when Kylie shows up at Gunnar’s doorstep. At first he won’t listen, but she begs and he relents. And then she drops a bombshell. She says she didn’t know that Gunnar’s brother was Micah’s father, but that she didn’t cheat. He raped her. I don’t know. This is all a bit too much for me at this point. How dramatic can one little boy’s life get?
  • Juliette struggles – Avery is getting very how-to-be-a-mom instructional with Juliette and it’s pretty annoying. Apparently he’s a professional mom.
  • Yes to bubbles, no to Tweeting – Jade throws a ridiculous party complete with bikinis and bubble machines. Of course, Layla has to be there. She tries to take a selfie with some famous guy, but Jade shuts it down. She allows absolutely no Tweeting from her parties. This just made me laugh. It also made me laugh that Luke basically dumps Jade at the party. He’s just way too old for her even though I’m pretty sure they are the same age. He even tells her that they are just too different (“I’m a cowboy from Kentucky and you’re…” “Jade St. John” – she finishes for him). Star-crossed, y’all.
  • Speaking of too old – Rayna goes on a secret mission to find Beverly and convince her to give Deacon a liver after all. Although that was actually really sweet, the sequence included several flashbacks of Rayna, Deacon, and Beverly as young adults. It was pretty comical to watch them try to pass for that age.

NASHVILLE - "Time Changes Things" - Rayna travels to Natchez, MS to try to help Deacon and we learn how her past with him affects his life-and-death struggle today. Jade invites Luke, Jeff and Layla to her beachfront bash in her home in Malibu which turns into an all-night rager. Back in Nashville, new mom Juliette tries to jump-start her career with a last-minute rooftop concert, and Kiley returns to Gunnar with news that changes everything, on "Nashville," airing WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Mark Levine) OLIVER HUDSON, AUBREY PEEPLES, CHRISTINA AGUILERA

The good:

  • You save him – Despite the unfortunate flashbacks, I was glad Rayna went to try to convince Beverly. He is her brother, after all. I’m hoping that the check for one million dollars that Rayna left with Bev will change her mind.
  • Super dad – When Deacon comes home early and finds Maddie in bed with a boy it looks at first like he’s going to be too freaked out to talk to her about it. But in the end he knew what the right thing to do was. I love how he is trying so hard to be a good dad. I also love that he seems to be in a pretty good place. He even told Juliette about the cancer, and joked around about it and everything. He’s making progress.
  • Juliette’s comeback – Have I mentioned that I love Juliette? When Avery starts getting uppity and no one wants to jump start her comeback, Juliette takes things into her own hands. She rounds up her band, hires some lights and a helicopter, and has an unannounced concert on the top of a random building. Of course, it was a huge success. Even Avery had to stop and appreciate. Keep it up, Juliette!

Overall, I enjoyed this week’s episode. I just wish we could get rid of some of those old stories that just won’t seem to die. Maybe next time?
