Review: The Mindy Project, “Fertility Bites”
The best thing about TV doctors is that they don’t have to follow real doctor rules. You know, silly things like the Hippocratic oath and OSHA requirements.
Luckily. Or else Doctor L. would have been in real trouble in this week’s episode of The Mindy Project, “Fertility Bites.”
Instead, she just gets into pretend trouble (in the form of Danny being mad at her for like, a minute, and then getting over it) when she lies about her experience as a fertility doctor to rope in her first clients. But Mindy has to lie! She’s trying to build a new practice (with only Morgan’s help!) while also working her old job AND growing a baby. This gets extra tough when she realizes that no one wants to hire a fertility specialist who has never helped anyone get pregnant before. So she has to lie.
Specifically, she lies and says that she helped herself conceive. Of course we all know this isn’t true, since her pregnancy was a total surprise. However, her first patients believe her (and assume that Danny has fertility issues).
Unfortunately, her first patients are Cousin Lou and his girlfriend. Naturally, when Cousin Lou hears about Danny’s, um, issue, he immediately wants to be besties. They have so much in common!
This causes a hilarious miscommunication as Lou tries to befriend Danny at the Lahari Fertility Opening Gala and Danny, totally unaware of Mindy’s lie, gives a big ol’ speech about how proud his is of Mindy ‘growing’ on her own. The speech is full of silly puns, including Danny popping a champagne bottle that doesn’t really, um, pop. Naturally, the entire crowd thinks Danny is talking about his fertility issues. When Danny finds out what Mindy told everyone, he’s furious.
But, as usual, he can’t stay mad for long.
Also occurring this episode is some drama with Dr. Bergdhal who the support staff demands the practice must fire after he repeatedly talks down to them. (Oh and also he’s really smelly).
That is, until they see him sleeping in his car. Then they demand he gets rehired. This lead to a touching moment where Dr. Bergdhal has to admit that he’s having marital issues. Looks like he will be with the practice for awhile longer.
Once again, The Mindy Project left me confused about how to feel about Mindy. Am I supposed to think she’s a helpless idiot who bends ethical lines to get ahead, or is she a genius doctor putting too much pressure on herself? But, once I remembered that I have to throw logic aside, I enjoyed the episode.
Oh and Mindy met Kris Jenner. That was great.
